To commemorate the 10th Renault 4L International Art Festival, Renault has built an e-Plein Air retro concept car, which is based on the prototype of Renault 4L Plein Air beach car. The new car carries the same 6.1kWh capacity battery pack as Renault Twizy, with a range of about 100km.
Renault 4L Plein Air was developed by Renault for the French Army in 1964, and it was launched in 1968 but never became popular. Born for the military use, the major owners of this model eventually ended up by beach-goers. After manufactured around 500 models, Renault decided to shut the lineup down. A classic car re-introduction, especially for the one that failed to hatch its market, it's unimaginable what might possibly bring the e-Plein back if not for nostalgia.
E-Plein Air is recreated based on the prototype of Renault 4 and 4L “Plein Air” open-top. The whole shape is in retro style, with the central net being redesigned and sugar up the grid. Pacing in the middle of the car, the LOGO adds some witty ingredients to the front face.
The interior holds its vintage arrangement almost no redundant decoration, even the common display screen will not appear to disturb the retro fun. In detail, the gear shifting mechanism is designed next to the dashboard. Seats are painted to be blue and white, giving a refreshing sense from the inside.
The car's power system may be the same as Renault Twizy's, with a maximum motor power of 13 kW (17 Ps), a battery capacity of 6.1 kWh and a running endurance of about 100 km. For the moment, Renault has no plans to put e-Plein Air into production. However, Renault will not stall it if the car is warmly welcomed by the public.
