The all-new fourth-generation Ford Focus ST made its global debut back in early 2019, sporting the same five-door hatchback layout as its predecessor. Based on the Mk 4 Ford Focus, Ford’s Sport Technologies (ST) derivative of the Ford Focus is the second most powerful iteration of the European hot hatch after the Ford Focus RS.
Ford’s 2.3 litre EcoBoost twin-scroll turbocharged mill is the most powerful ever offered for a Focus ST, replacing the outgoing 2.0 litre EcoBoost seen in its predecessor with a 26 PS and 80 Nm jump in performance. It is paired to a six-speed manual box and for the first time, an optional 7-speed automatic transmission.
Some serious engineering tech has been introduced underneath the relatively understated exterior. Sitting 10 mm lower than a regular Ford Focus, the ST features sophisticated feature like the Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) and Electronic Limited Slip Differential to provide superior handling dynamics and stability. The VW Golf GTi has got some work cut out for it.
Performance- The 2.3 L Ford EcoBoost engine is the most powerful engine to be fitted to a Ford Focus ST. The engine is related to the old Focus RS unit but now made sharper, more communicative, and more predictable.
Ride and Handling- Ford has always set the ride and handling benchmark for a front-engined front-wheel-drive hot hatch. With improved electric power-assisted steering and a sophisticated chassis set up with advanced feature like the Continuous Controlled Damping (CCD), the Focus ST strikes a perfect balance between ride comfort and dynamic performance.
Practicality- The racing-inspired RECARO seats are supportive yet comfortable. A larger overall dimension translates to a more useable interior space and larger load space for everyday use.
Exterior Styling- Sporting a more grown-up look with curved and smooth body lines, some may find the exterior design too billowy for the sporty character of a Focus ST.
Uninspired cabin layout- Not a whole lot of distinction between a normal Ford Focus and the Focus ST’s interior layout.
