MG ZS

The MG ZS is a B-segment SUV that rivals the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-30. The ZS family in Thailand is split into two models: one with a pure-petrol powertrain and another battery-electric version. There's three variants of the petrol version (C+, D+ and X+), but just the only one ZS EV. However, only the ZS EV has been spotted testing on Malaysian roads. The ZS EV is powered by an electric motor pushing 150 PS and 350 Nm, paired to an e-CVT, with a range of 337 km (NEDC). Beneath the Mazda-esque exterior, there's clean and crisp interior that's upholstered in synthetic leather, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 6 speakers but no Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. There's also good practical stuff like 60:40 split-folding rear seats, 6-way electronically-adjustable driver's seat and PM 2.5 air filtration system. Besides 6 airbags and the standard safety system, the ZS EV comes with an ADAS suite including ACC, FCW, LKA and BSM with RCTA. The MG ZS EV is slated to launch on Malaysian shores sometime in 2021.

2021 MG ZS Overview

MG ZS Overview

The MG ZS is a B-segment crossover SUV produced by the Shanghai-based SAIC Motor under the now Chinese owned MG marque. The best-selling model is the second SUV to be produced by the company after the larger MG GS. It rivals the highly popular Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30 and the Hyundai Kona.

Internationally, the MG ZS is offered with two different powertrain options, the petrol-powered engines variant, or an all-electric EV variant. The latter became the cheapest electric car available in the market when it was revealed in Australia back in November 2020.

Thailand made models offers three variants of the 1.5 L petrol-powered version (C+, D+ and X+), and a single all-electric ZS EV (EZS in China) model. The ZS EV is the only variant that has been spotted testing on Malaysian roads. It is powered by an electric motor pushing out 150 PS and 350 Nm, paired to an e-CVT, with a range of 337 km. The MG ZS EV comes in a special Copenhagen Blue exterior colour and Dutch windmill-inspired alloy wheels design. It is expected to be launched officially in Malaysia sometime in 2021.

Must Read

  • Performance- The electric motor serves up a respectable 110 kW (150 PS) and an impressive 350 Nm of torque. The instantaneous torque is addictive, and the car feels zippy and effortless on the move.

  • Upmarket Interior- Soft touch material in the cabin feels solid and suitably plush to the touch. The contemporary interior layout makes the car feels more expensive than the price tag suggests.

  • Feature- It comes equipped with MG’s full suite of Advance Driver Assistance System (ADAS) as standard.

  • Ride and Handling- The less than composed ride through the bends and over road imperfections leaves much to be desired.

  • Range- The electric range available from the 44.5 kW/h battery pack is inferior to what most rivals can offer.
