Mazda 3 BM/BN
You could have the Mazda 3 in sedan or hatchback forms, but one thing's guaranteed, a car that's immersive to steer, brimming with feedback and tactility. Mechanically, all variants used the SkyActiv 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine (162 PS, 210 Nm). Only a 6-speed automatic transmission was available.
It's not the most spacious car, but you'll feel right at home inside the driver-centric cabin, finished off in high-quality materials. A full-spec, pre-facelift 2015 unit can be had for around RM 60k, while a facelifted unit hovers in the RM 80k region.
Subaru Forester (SJ)
The Subaru Forester has the best road-biased all-wheel drive system on the market. With a boxer engine, it’s even more Porsche than any Porsche SUV, at least from an engineering standpoint.
With 148 PS and 196 Nm from the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre boxer engine, it won’t blow your mind, but it's decently brisk. Used examples start from as low as RM 40k.
BMW 3 Series F30
Arguably the best modern BMW 3 Series. It blends timeless design with the perfect balance of handling and comfort, something that’s lost on the newer G20-generation 3 series.
Which variant to pick depends entirely on your budget; given that our budget is limited to around RM 100k, we’d suggest going for the 318i for its availability and nimbleness. If you’re a frequent traveller, then the 320d is the better choice for its efficiency and reliability. If you want the most out from your money, the 330e fits the bill.
Proton Iriz
Though not as popular as the ubiquitious Perodua Myvi, the Proton Iriz is a good choice for those looking for a first car. As a bonus, the Iriz also serves up a great drive, something the Myvi can only hope to do. Prices range from RM 20k for a 2015 model, up to around RM 38k for a 2019 facelift model.
Volkswagen Golf Mk7
Still the best Volkswagen Golf generation, the Mark 7 (Mk7). This is the generation in which they nailed just about everything right, from the way it drives to the interior and ergonomics - none of those infuriating controls in the Mk8.
The version you really want is likely the GTI variant, priced at around RM 80k for the pre-facelift model. The facelifted (Mk7.5) models exceed the RM 100k budget. Alternatively, consider the standard Golf 1.4 TSI, available from approximately RM 50k.
