Pros&Cons

Pros

  • Exceptional Balance Between Performance and Practicality of Comfortable Family Car
An impressive power output with steering capabilities rank right up to excellent handling where the vehicle does not dart around too much and feels predictable when it comes to how the vehicle steers which feels like you relate to the wheels. Getting in and out of is super easy thanks to the roofline being so tall and flat. The view from the cockpit is expansive that simply find the right driving position and blind spots extremely few.

  • Comfortable Ride and Exceptional Handling
The vehicle is well-designed and well-composed for handling different roadways capabilities. Body roll is kept to a minimum while rounding through difficult turns. You will get some engine noise at slower speeds and while idling, but it never feels obnoxious. Wind noise only seeps in, in a modest amount, while driving along at high speeds as the cabin is well-insulated.

  • Ease of Usage and Interior Practicality
Controls are easy to figure out, controls are all placed well within the driver's reach and are clearly labelled. The touchscreen display has a simplified and logical set-up, so you will not be confused by a wonky interface. The front door pockets can easily fit two water bottles in each, and the rear door pockets can each comfortably fit one water bottle. The armrest opens into a big bin, and there is storage behind the centre console. The glove box is notably massive and an impressive one of the biggest cargo spaces in this segment.

Cons

  • A Lot of Hard Plastics
There are quite a few hard-plastic surfaces inside cabin. The centre console looks kind of tacky in comparison to the faux-leather seating and door trim and amount of rattling when you turn the speakers up on the audio system.

  • Powertrain

    Volkswagen Golf R - Powertrain

    Engine

The Volkswagen Golf R 2.0 litre TSI engine has 290 PS at 5,500 to 6,500 rpm and 380 Nm from 2,000 to 5,400 rpm. A fully electronic coolant regulator unit, the engine also features very efficient thermal management with a short warm-up phase. The resultant reduction in friction losses helps to reduce fuel consumption.

    Transmission

The Volkswagen Golf R is paired with a seven-speed, wet dual-clutch DSG transmission, and power is applied to all four wheels via the automaker’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

    Chassis

The Volkswagen Golf R suspension has been retuned specifically for the vehicle, starting with an 0.8-inch lower ride height and the car features a strut-type front, a multi-link rear suspension and a new aluminium subframe.

It comes with the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive dampers, which can adjust the settings up to 200 times a second based on the road conditions to eliminate understeer in the corners, partly due to the ability to significantly increase the differential’s locking torque in Sport mode.

    Drivetrain

The Volkswagen Golf R include a newly developed torque vectoring 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and a Vehicle Dynamics Manager. The new 4Motion setup features selective wheel torque control on the rear axle-the new rear differential distributes the power between the front and rear axles, and between the two rear wheels for improved handling.

  • Driving Performance

Volkswagen Golf R - Driving Performance

The Volkswagen Golf R Performance figures include a 0-100 km/h time of 5.1 seconds and an electronically limited 250 km/h top speed. Turbo lag is hardly noticeable, and take-offs are immediate. The Volkswagen Golf R underwent its final tuning on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack and includes new “Special” and “Drift” driving profiles in addition to the traditional Comfort, Sport, Race and Individual profiles in Driving Mode Selection.

The Sport profile is the dynamic and ideal basic mode for the Golf R. The Comfort profile is tailored more for a high level of comfort, while still offering a high degree of steering precision. In the Race profile, the coasting function (freewheeling without drive power) is deactivated, the engine sound is increased, and the DSG, DCC, steering and the all-wheel-drive system are adjusted to a sportier setup.

  • Ride Comfort

Volkswagen Golf R - Ride Comfort

The Volkswagen Golf R boasting powerful performance figures, it wouldn’t mean much if it’s a difficult beast to tame. Depending on the mood or situation you are in, you can switch between modes or leave it at Race because that’s the most fun of all. The gear shifts are also quick and the DSG transmission slots in the correct speed confidently be it straight line or cornering.

The steering is sharp, and it is so effortless to throw the car around yet so planted that you will be left wide-eyed and grinning ear-to ear. The brakes are equally impressive with a good bite to it and it’s always a joy to hear the engine automatically rev-matching as the gears shift down.

In Race mode, the exhaust note is louder, and the suspension is stiff which is uncomfortable for rear passengers. Just choose the Eco drive mode and the car gets quiet, the dampers are softer, and the gear mapping makes for better fuel efficiency.

Volkswagen Golf R - Fuel Consumption

The Volkswagen Golf R fuel consumption is rated at 8.7 L/km for urban drive, 6.0 L/km for extra urban and 7.0 l/km combined.

As a world first, the all-wheel drive is also networked via a Vehicle Dynamics Manager (VDM) with other running gear systems such the electronic differential locks (XDS®) and the DCC® adaptive damping system. The Volkswagen Golf R has performance, convenience and comfort that offers optimal traction, neutral handling with the utmost level of precision, and maximum agility and driving pleasure.
