In the coming weeks, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) is expected to announce that 2023’s new car sales have hit a new record high, surpassing the previous record of 720,658 units set in 2022.
The official figure will only be announced at the end of this month but WapCar understands that the 4 biggest automotive brands in Malaysia – Perodua, Proton, Toyota, and Honda – which control over 80 percent of Malaysia’s new car sales, have collectively sold more than 60,000 units in December 2023.
Add this to November’s total sales tally of 718,748 units and it is obvious that 2023’s total industry volume (TIV) will go well above 780,000 units, possibly finishing just under 800,000 units.

Much of the sales were contributed in the first half of 2023, as manufacturers rushed to meet the 31-March 2023 deadline to before the post-pandemic stimulus sales tax-exemption programme expires. The exemption was only applicable to locally assembled (CKD) passenger cars.
