First clear look at the BYD Shark; Hilux, Ranger rival to debut next week with 687 PS PHEV powertrain? 01

You're going to have to pause the video here and there, but this is the first proper look at the production-spec BYD Shark, the Chinese carmaker's first-ever pick-up truck ahead of its global debut that's taking place on 14-May 2024 in Mexico.

Its 52-second teaser video shows off the Shark in a dark room, but at least there's no camouflage to hide its general design. Up front it looks suspiciously similar to a Ford F150 Raptor โ€“ down to the in-your-face BYD script by the grille โ€“ and round the back it has a lightbar, as is vogue these days.

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22557728108/my_article_fourthp_under_pc', [ 728, 90 ], 'div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs(); googletag.enableServices(); });
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });

BYD has kept mum about the details of the car so far, though we do know a few things: it's spun from the company's new Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) Super Hybrid Platform, which can integrate off-road tech such as three differential locks and a sharper turning radius.

The Toyota Hilux/Ford Ranger rival is also confirmed to run a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, however exact specifications are not declared at point of publication. There is a possibility that it could share the system with the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 (another BYD sister brand's model), and that has a total output of 687 PS.

Tantalising prospect, isn't it? All will be revealed soon...
