BYD is the best-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) brand in Thailand and is setting up an assembly plant in the Kingdom. According to a Chinese insider, production of the first Thai-assembled (CKD) BYD model could begin this month, pointing to a launch in May.
The insider posted a photo on their Weibo that was allegedly taken at the BYD Thailand factory. It showed a BYD Atto 3 with some parts installed. The right-hand drive (RHD) unit is on a production line surrounded by working personnel.
Located in Rayong, BYD Thailand’s plant covers a 960,000 square metre area and has an annual production volume of 150,000 vehicles. BYD officials stated that this plant will accelerate the company’s sales in the Asia-Pacific market. It is also planning to set up a plant in Indonesia.

While BYD has not stated officially, the first Thai-assembled model could be the BYD Atto 3. It was Thailand’s best-selling BEV of 2023 and it is also the most likely candidate given that its Body on White is shown in the insider photo.
The Thai-spec Atto 3 was also given an update which made its launch at the 2024 Bangkok Motor Show. The 2024 model is up to 18 percent cheaper than before, gains a larger battery, and ditches the “Build Your Dreams” script on the tailgate.
Back home, the BYD Atto 3 is fully imported (CBU) from China and distributed by Sime Darby Beyond Auto. It is offering up to RM 20,000 in cash rebates for 2023 manufacturing year (MY2023) models but these are the listed on-the-road prices sans discount:
BYD Atto 3 Standard Range – RM 150,430
BYD Atto 3 Extended Range – RM 168,430
