BYD has yet to trouble the top-tier Japanese brands like Toyota or Honda in Malaysia’s overall car sales, but it will soon surpass second tier brands like Ford and Nissan. It has already propelled past VW.
According to data compiled by RHB Investment Bank, Sime Darby Beyond Auto, the distributor of BYD cars in Malaysia, sold 1,919 units in the first quarter of 2024. RHB says BYD now controls 71% of Malaysia’s battery EV (BEV) segment.
That puts BYD ahead of VW’s 412 units and Volvo’s 560 units, drawing it closer to Ford’s 1,955 units and Tan Chong group’s combined Nissan-Renault total of 2,304 units.

In March 2024 alone, sales of BYD cars were up 57% month-on-month, reaching 787 units. Of course, the playing field isn’t level, as BEVs are exempted from import and excise tax until 31-December 2025.
BYD sells three models in Malaysia, all battery BEVs. The BYD Dolphin starts from RM 100,530. The BYD Atto 3 starts from RM 150,430, while the BYD Seal starts from RM 180,430.
