In a statement at a road safety event organised by the Ministry of Transport (MoT) today, Transport Minister Anthony Loke clarified that the government currently has no plans to mandate the installation of dashcams in all vehicles.
While acknowledging proposals for such a mandate, Minister Loke highlighted the challenges of implementing new regulations that would affect all vehicles, particularly older models still in use.
"The Ministry of Transport has no plan yet; there are proposals to mandate the installation of dashcams, but as I mentioned, if we were to mandate something new for all vehicles, there would be challenges, as many older vehicles are also on the roads," said Loke.

Despite the absence of a mandate, the Ministry is actively encouraging manufacturers to offer dashcams, especially in new vehicles. Loke also emphasised the benefits for (public and private) transport operators to install dashcams to document on-road occurrences, which can be crucial evidence in the event of accidents.
Loke also expressed grave concerns about road safety in Malaysia, citing that accidents, particularly those resulting in fatalities, are a major issue. Last year alone, Malaysia recorded over 600,000 accidents with over 6,500 fatalities, averaging about 15-17 deaths daily—an alarmingly high rate. Two-thirds of fatalities involved motorcyclists.
While the Ministry is not moving forward with a dashcam mandate at this time, it continues to explore measures to enhance road safety - mainly through educational programs - to reduce the number of traffic-related accidents in the country.
