It commits to being fully electric and it comes with an ultrafast charging setup from its four electric motors. Charging the battery to 80% will take 12 minutes using a 350-kilowatt DC fast charger. The 20- and 21-inch magnesium wheels, front and rear, wear Pirelli Trofeo R tires to help control weight, but even between those and the carbon-fibre monocoque and body, the car still heavy as electric components aren't exactly lightweight.
The vehicle rear Venturi tunnel design is inspired by Le Mans endurance race cars, optimizing airflow by directing it through the body and, at the same time, reduces drag. Lotus even added a red LED light to each tunnel in order to replicate the look of a jet's afterburner. The bi-plane front splitter is also designed to improve aerodynamics.
The exterior design takes cues from race cars built to dominate the track. The car's Sheetmetal includes elements such as large rear wing mirrors and the butterfly doors without handles to preserve the car's clean, sculptural aesthetic, and operated using the key fob. Integrated cameras into the front wings, another in the roof and side-view cameras, that replace the side mirrors which are electronically deployed provides a central rear view and images are displayed on three interior screens.
The Lotus Evija's electrically adjustable seats feature a carbon fibre shell and Alcantara padded seats. The driver can manually adjust the tilt and length of the steering column, and there are two bespoke storage spaces placed close to the occupants' hip points. The exclusive steering wheel is inspired by LMP and Formula 1 design. It carries a unique shape with several integrated controls and two drive modes.
The list of standard interior amenities includes climate control and three-point seatbelts, with four-point harnesses offered as optional equipment. A single digital display screen shows all vital information drivers need to know, including current driving mode, battery charge, and remaining charge.
Another first for Lotus is the Evija's over-the-air software updates and a chronograph allowing drivers to record their lap times. Lotus even created a smartphone app that lets owners monitor their Evija's battery status, driving range, and even remote air conditioning control from anywhere in the world.
The Lotus Evija comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and Lotus has installed an onboard modem that facilitates connection to the cloud. A smartphone app is available that allows drivers to monitor the vehicle from any location, checking on things such as battery charge status and driving range.
It's equipped with technology that's designed to make charging the battery almost as quick as getting a fill-up at the petrol station. The car takes 12 minutes for an 80 percent charge, and a mere 18 minutes for full charge and the 70-kilowatt-hour unit that have an EPA-rated range of approximately 400 km with normal driving.
The car boasts a race-inspired suspension featuring three spool-valve dampers per axle—one at each corner and an inboard-mounted third to control heave. A single-speed automatic transmission governs it all, sending power to all four wheels.
Niftiest features, such as active aerodynamics and torque vectoring across its axles, communicative steering rack and the car’s curb weight is designed to optimize responsive handling characteristics. An advanced braking system sees carbon-ceramic discs front and rear.
