The Porsche Cayenne Coupé is an extension to the highly successful Cayenne family. Based on VW Group MLB platform that also underpins the third generation Porsche Cayenne SUV, the Coupé is positioned as a sportier, and more athletic alternative to the already very capable SUV. It shares all the technical highlights of the current Porsche Cayenne but sporting a more dynamic design which includes a steeper roofline, sharper contours, and a rear section unique only to the Coupé.
The Porsche Cayenne Coupé is offered in an extensive selection of trim levels to say the least. They include the Cayenne Coupé, E-Hybrid, S, GTS, Turbo, Turbo S E-Hybrid, and the high-performance GT variant. It is available only in CBU form for now, but with the CKD Porsche Cayenne SUV set to make its debut in March 2022, it will not be long before the Coupé variant follow suit.
When Porsche’s first SUV, the first-generation Porsche Cayenne made its debut back in 2002, it was nothing short of an abomination with its awkward look and bulky proportion. The third generation Porsche Cayenne has come a long way since, especially now with the Coupé variant. The car is beautifully proportioned with bits from the standard SUV combined with dynamic custom design elements for the Coupé.
The sloping roof has been lowered by 20 mm compared to the standard SUV and the rear doors has been redesigned to accommodate the more pronounced shoulder haunches, which is broadened by 18 mm to be exact. The adaptive roof spoiler, which is part of the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (the first SUV to be featured with this system), accentuates the distinctive Coupé silhouette, exemplifying the iconic Porsche 911 flyline that flows seamlessly from the headlights to the taillight strip.
New roof design brings along a new panoramic fixed glass roof with integrated roller blind as standard while a carbon-fibre roof is available as an optional item. It is unmistakably Porsche up front, with its clean and understated design featuring a pair of LED headlights with four-point DRL, heavily emphasized front wings, and a front bonnet with a power dome.
The front windscreen and A-pillar are more steeply raked than in the standard SUV thanks to the lowered roof line. The revised lower bumper design brings the car closer to the ground, giving it a lower road-hugging stance. Tyre sizes ranges from 19-inch up to 22-inch.
The Porsche Cayenne Coupé is 13 mm longer and 20 mm lower compared to the standard SUV. Although the Coupé appears wider visually thanks to the tapered off rear section and broadened rear fenders, it is in fact as wide as the Porsche Cayenne SUV. Based on the same MLB platform, the wheelbase is unsurprisingly identical too.

In keeping with its enthusiast ethos, Porsche has stuck with a fixed analogue rev counter slap bang in the middle of the instrument cluster, flanked by a pair of configurable digital display. The adaptive sport seats up front provides adequate support for a more enthusiastic driving without compromising on comfort. The rear now features a pair of sculpted sports seats as standard, but alternatively you can spec a standard three-seat bench if so desired.
Although the roof has been dropped by 20mm, headroom does not present as much of an issue as one might have expected, as the rear seats have been dropped accordingly too. Luggage capacity here is 625 litres with the seats in place, 125 litre down compared to the standard SUV’s 770 litres. The maximum 1,540 litres available with the rear seats folded is commendable for a Coupé SUV.
Available driver assistance system includes Porsche InnoDrive with adaptive cruise control, Head-Up Display, Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), Night Vision Assist, Active Parking Assistance, Remote Park Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Change Assist, and Collision and Brake Assist.
Notable technical highlights shared with the third generation Porsche Cayenne SUV include the Porsche 4D Chassis Control, three-chamber air suspension, rear-axle steering and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electronic roll stabilisation.
The Cayenne S Coupé on the other hand is equipped with a 2.9 litre twin-turbo V6 engine, developing a very respectable 440 PS at 5,700 RPM and maximum torque of 550 Nm from 1,800 RPM. Century sprint is completed in 5.0 seconds flat, onwards to a top speed of 263 km/h.
Under the hood of the Cayenne GTS and the Cayenne Turbo is a thumping 4.0 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with twin-scroll turbocharger. The GTS develops 460 PS from 6,000 RPM and 620 Nm of torque from 1,800 RPM. The additional performance slash a further 0.5 seconds off the Cayenne S’s 0-100 km/h time and maxed out at 270 km/h.
The uprated V8 engine in the Turbo churns out 90 PS more, with a total of 550 PS at 5,700 RPM and a whopping 770 Nm of torque from mere 2,000 RPM. 0-100km/h is dealt with in a supercar-beating 3.9 seconds (with sport chrono package) before topping out at 286 km/h.
The Cayenne E-Hybrid’s powertrain comprises of the same 3.0-litre V6 engine from the base Cayenne Coupé, augmented by a 100-kW electric motor, which results in a total system output of 462 PS and 700 Nm of torque. It is 0.1 seconds off the pace of the Cayenne S to 100 km/h (5.1 seconds) from standstill and top speed is rated at 253 km/h.
The 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is sufficient to provide up to 42-43 km of all-electric range and a 135 km/h all-electric top speed. The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid combines the performance of the V8 engine from the Cayenne Turbo and the same 100 kW electric motor to produce a total system output of 680 PS at 5,750 RPM and a tyre-shredding 900 Nm of torque from 1,500 RPM. It is 0.1 seconds quicker to 100 km/h (3.8 seconds) than the Turbo and with a higher top speed of 295 km/h.
The range topping Cayenne Turbo GT is fitted with an uprated 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine that has been turned up to eleven. As Porsche claims, it is the maximum configuration status of the twin-turbo V8 engine at its core. It develops 640 PS and a staggering 850 Nm of torque from 2,300 RPM. It can out accelerate a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, completing the century sprints in an eye-watering 3.5 seconds.
The active all-wheel drive of Porsche Traction Management (PTM) provides optimal lateral support as well as the best possible power distribution. While the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) improves driving dynamics and stability by precisely applying brakes on the rear wheels and electronically regulates the rear differential lock for increased traction and high-speed agility.
Working together with Porsche Active Suspension Management System, the system actively controls the damping force as per the prevailing road condition and the selected driving modes (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus).
The rear-axle steering improves handling at low-speed maneuvering and increases driving stability at higher speeds while the active roll stabilization system, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), suppresses lateral body movement during dynamic cornering and improves ride comfort at any speed.
While it may be less practical, less roomy, more expensive, and only marginally sharper to drive in the real-world condition compared to the standard SUV, the Porsche Cayenne Coupé is excellent at what it does best, which is turning heads while putting a smile on your face.
