Overview

Proton's only MPV 2019 Proton Exora has been on sale since 2009. The latest version of the car retains its turbocharged 1.6-litre engine but was updated to include touches of Geely's influence like a 7-inch infotainment system complete with voice command, online music streaming and navigation. The C-segment MPV doesn't have any direct rivals thanks to the abundant equipment and price. (2019 Proton Exora – it’s 10 years old, still worth your consideration?)

Design

Throughout the years the car has been on sale, the Proton Exora has not change much. The latest version saw the addition of a sporty black roof and stylish black skirtings.

Dimensions

The Proton Exora measures in at 4,160 x 1,809 x 1,691 x 2,730 mm in length, width, height, and wheelbase.

Lighting

Both Executive and Premium variants are equipped with halogen headlights but only the Premium variant gets DRLs and rear fog lamps.

Wheels

The Proton Exora rides on 16-inch wheels.

Interior

2019 Proton Exora interior

Centre Console

The Exora's interior is strangely devoid cubby sapce even though there is plenty of space to fit more functional spaces. Instead, the MPV gets shallow storage spaces and spaces too far to reach sitting upright on the seats.

Dashboard

Though Proton has done what they can to improve the MPV's dashboard quality, the plastic still rough to touch.

2019 Proton Exora boot space

Space

The Exora gets legroom and headroom aplenty, even for the third row passengers.

Boot

Unfortunately, all the space in the car seems to have been dedicated to the passengers as the boot space is close to non-existence.

Features

Safety Features

During one of the Exora's many updates, Proton has added Electric Stability Control into the car, though there are still only 2 airbags. (At RM 66k, the Proton Exora is the cheapest MPV to feature ESC)

Comfort Features

Though not the most comfortable cabin, the Premium variant's semi-leather seats are small touches that Proton has added in an effort to make the car more comfortable.

Infotainment

In the latest update, the Exora gained an advanced 7-inch touchscreen head unit that connects to 4G and WiFi with Hi Proton features like online music streaming, navigation and even weather forecast.

Powertrain

Engine

Since the facelift in 2016, the Exora's 1.6-litre engine gained a turbo to allow the car more push to shove. It now produces 140 ps and 205 Nm.

Transmission

Like its fellow Proton siblings, the Exora's 1.6-litre engine is also mated to a CVT.

Four-wheel drive system

The Proton Exora is powered by its front wheels.

Driving Performance

2019 Proton Exora moving View the 2019 Proton Exora Review

Acceleration Time

As the Proton Exora is a heavy MPV, Proton added the turbo to help the car roll off the line faster allowing the Exora to make the century sprint in 11 seconds.

Braking Distance

It takes the Proton Exora 15 seconds to come to a complete stand still from 0-100-0 km/h.

Engine Performance

The Proton Exora is too heavy for the car to respond fast. As it is heavy, it eliminates any jerks in the performance.

Transmission Performance

While it is reported that Proton's CVTs are jerky units, it is barely noticeable on the Exora.

Steering and Handling

Unlike most cars, the Exora uses a hydraulic power steering instead of an electric power steering instead. And the effects is strangely heavy, definitely not a car that is easy to drive around the city's tight parking lots.

Ride Comfort

Sound Proofing

The Proton Exora's sound proofing measures in at 69 decibels going at 90 km/h while 110 km/h sound levels measures at 70 decibels.

Passenger Comfort

The Exora is first and foremost a family car, and despite the heavy steering, the Exora is a very comfortable car for its occupants. The Macpherson struts at the front and torsion beams in the back are set just right to eliminate all possible portholes.

Fuel Consumption

2019 Proton Exora fuel lid

Fuel Consumption

The Exora returns 9.8-litres / 100km in a mix of stop-go traffic and highway cruising. While new cars are coming equipped with turbochargers for better fuel consumption, the car's turbocharger is one to give the car more power instead of fuel efficiency purposes.

Conclusion

2019 Proton Exora rear quarter moving shot

With the Exora packed to the brim with all the latest tech, it's not surprising that the car is Malaysia's best-selling MPV. It was already a winner thanks to the abundance of space, but the latest update saw the addition of Hi Proton and 4G+WiFi services it now amplifies value for money.
