Kia is the fourth best-selling brand in Australia in 2023 behind Toyota, Mazda, and Ford but with its upcoming model designed for Down Under, it might get a chance to reach the podium.

Set to launch in 2025, Kia’s first-ever pick-up truck will aim squarely at the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux which are the top two best-selling cars in Australia. The Korean carmaker recently revealed that it will be named the Kia Tasman after years of speculation.

The name itself follows Kia’s tradition of naming its models after locations – Telluride is named after the Colorado town while Soul is based on the Korean pronunciation of the country's capital. Tasman is named after Tasmania, the Australian island as well as the Tasman Sea which is located between Australia and New Zealand.

Kia explained the reason behind its decision: “Boasting a unique blend of diverse wilderness and cultural richness, the (Tasman) island’s stunning landscape and diverse wildlife contribute to a sense of wonder and community found nowhere else on Earth. The name encapsulates this spirit of adventure, reflecting the rugged nature and capabilities of Kia’s upcoming pickup truck.”

The name was proposed by Kia Australia and the country is also where the Tasman is mainly developed. It released a commercial which featured 20 of Australia’s most iconic sporting figures debating the pick-up truck’s name.

The Kia Tasman is dubbed “the most Australian Kia ever developed” and the ute – Aussie slang for pick-up – will also make its launch in Korea, Africa, and the Middle East.

Kia stated, “This strategic approach aims to cater to the unique demands and preferences of each region, considering factors such as Australia's strong market for pickup trucks, Korea's growing interest in outdoor pursuits, and Africa and the Middle East’s need for off-road vehicles in diverse terrains, including deserts.”

The Korean carmaker has not mentioned whether the Tasman will make its way into Southeast Asia since Thailand is also another market where pick-up trucks are a favourite among buyers.

No other information has been revealed though it has been speculated that 3 powertrains could be offered – a turbodiesel, a petrol, and a battery electric (BEV) version. It could even utilise a ladder-frame construction to solidify its outback-conquering credentials.
