If you're in the market for a reliable and stylish compact SUV in Malaysia for around RM 150k, you might be looking at the usual suspects – the Honda HR-V or the Mazda CX-30 for a bit more exclusivity.

While they’re all great choices, you could be totally different and pony up your cash for a recond Toyota Yaris Cross, but not the ASEAN market ‘D03B’ version, the 'real' (XP210) Yaris Cross that is sold in Japan, Europe and Australia.

Making its debut in September 2020, the (XP210) Toyota Yaris Cross and is based on Toyota's superb TNGA-B platform, as opposed to the Daihatsu-developed DNGA platform which underpins the ASEAN-specific Yaris Cross and Perodua Ativa.

The Yaris Cross is powered by a (120 PS/145 Nm) M15A-FKS 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine from Toyota’s Dynamic Force engine family. 

The Yaris Cross is also offered with a 116 PS/141 Nm hybrid powertrain in selected markets, but the Malaysian recond units get the simpler 1.5-litre NA units. The engine is mated to a CVT automatic transmission.

The exterior of the Yaris Cross features a distinctive design with a prominent front grille reminiscent of the larger RAV4. It includes angular wheel arches and a blocky rear end with swooping taillights, toughened up by black cladding. The advertised recond units also feature the 16-inch wheel and tyre package. 

Inside, the Yaris Cross' minimalist layout features dashboard sections and door linings that are enhanced with soft padding and felt for a premium feel. The infotainment system features either a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The crossover also boasts a powered tailgate opening and a decent boot capacity of 390 litres.

The advertised units also notably feature the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite which includes the Pre-collision Safety System, Low Speed Acceleration Control, Emergency Steering Assist, Full Speed Range Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Tracing Assist amongst others.

Why choose a recond Toyota Yaris Cross?

The Yaris Cross' blend of esign, size, features and driving performance are good reasons to get one. Also, given its rarity, the recond Yaris Cross stands out in the crowd, guaranteeing more exclusivity for your money.

Of course, for RM 145k, you could also get the top-spec Honda HR-V 1.5L e:HEV RS or a mid-spec 2.0-litre Mazda CX-30 (High) – both of which offer more power.

Truth be told, if that’s what you’re looking for power, then yes, go for the HR-V or CX-30. However, the Toyota Dynamic Force engines are no slouch either, making up for the lack of outright power with superb drivability and refinement.   

However, before you buy one, get your Yaris Cross inspected by a third party, ask for the detailed Japanese grading reports (or auction sheets), and enquire about the warranty package that comes with the car. 

Conclusion

While it may not be for everyone, purchasing a second Toyota Yaris Cross should appeal to a discerning buyer who also desires exclusivity, as well as style, practicality and comfort.
