The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has announced that they are developing a new one-kilometer long test track, to be used for the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) functions as well as ASEAN NCAP assessments.
Speaking at the virtual 4th ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards 2020 yesterday, MIROS Director-General Prof Ir. Ts. Dr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said the new test track will be situated 3 kilometres away from the Sepang International Circuit and is expected to begin operations on 1-June 2021.
The track will mainly be used to conduct autonomous emergency braking (AEB) tests, among others.
According to The Malaysian Reserve's report, MIROS will build the test track from self-funding. Later on, the institute will relocate its headquarters to the same site, alongside a new crash test laboratory. This will be government-funded.
Just to recap, Asean NCAP launched their new assessment protocol for 2021-2025 in July last year.
The new ASEAN NCAP Protocol 2021-2025 consists of 4 assessment pillars, as below:
ASEAN NCAP Protocol 2021-2025 | |
---|---|
Assessment Pillars | Weightage |
Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) | 40% |
Child Occupant Protection (COP) | 20% |
Safety Assist (SA) | 20% |
Motorcyclist Safety (MS) | 20% |
The 'Motorcyclist Safety' assessement is new, and was not part of the previous 2017-2020 testing protocol.
Beyond these, ASEAN NCAP will also be assessing AEB effectiveness on two fronts, namely AEB City and AEB Inter-Urban.
