The Geely Vision Starburst previews a cosmic future for the Chinese carmaker

Ever since it was introduced on a Volvo concept car a decade ago, Geely’s “Expanding Cosmos” design philosophy has shown that a Chinese carmaker has what it takes to design something original and pretty.

Now, it will be taking its design philosophy to a whole new level with the Geely Vision Starburst. Introduced by Geely Design Shanghai, the Vision Starburst will be a new and alternative expression of the “Expanding Cosmos” philosophy.

Though its name reminds some of a candy that can be found at a Jaya Grocer or Village Grocer, the inspiration was more intergalactic. Specifically, the phenomena where nebulas and other elements come together to form new stars.

Much like how different elements in the universe form a beautiful star, the designers at Geely Shanghai cooperated throughout the design process to create unity. Be it between exterior and interior or even through car and user, it’s the design language version of Mazda’s Jinba Ittai.

The Vision Starburst has a very striking design overall, with the shape resembling that of a sleek and futuristic fastback. Even the grille showcases a very striking change from the “Expanding Cosmos” we’re used to seeing on many Geely models.

Instead, it gets a unique parabolic pattern, which combined with the lighting design gives off an effect inspired by the energy given off during an actual starburst.

Speaking of the lights, they help to indicate different states of the vehicle's condition including when in motion, parking and even charging. Inside, the lights also play a role in communicating with the occupants such as showing the gear settings or other vehicle information.

Granted, the bold and futuristic shape of the Vision Starburst as a whole will not enter production any time soon. Geely explicitly stated that the concept will not be made into a production vehicle. However, some design elements could appear in future models within the Geely Group, perhaps including Proton.
