Despite the Movement Control Order MCO that has been implemented since last year, UMWT (UMW Toyota) has posted more than double year-on-year growth in sales in May 2021, from May 2020. This was achieved in the face of a global semiconductor shortage that affected all carmakers, on top of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This growth was propelled by new model introductions, festive campaigns and the sales tax exemption that has since been extended to 31 December 2021.
UMWT sold 7,595 vehicles in May 2021, which represented a 120% increase in sales, compared to 3,456 vehicles sold in May 2020. This increase was mainly driven by two popular models, that being the Toyota Vios and Toyota Hilux, which combined to contribute 78% of total sales in May 2021.
Besides that, the all-new Toyota Harrier, Corolla Cross, plus the improved Innova and Fortuner contributed positively to sales in May 2021 as well. Cumulatively, as of May 2021, UMWT has sold 34,026 vehicles, compared to 14,052 units sold in the same five-month period of 2020.
Toyota's sister-company within the wider UMW Holdings group, Perodua, managed to deliver a total of 96,281 vehicles as of May 2021, which also exceeded the 52,920 units delivered in the same five-month period in 2020.
UMW Holdings Berhad’s President and Group CEO, Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said, “Demand for UMWT and Perodua vehicles remains strong, with both marques continuing to register healthy sales. However, the semiconductor chips shortage has impacted Perodua’s production and it is exploring various means to overcome this problem. Both UMWT and Perodua have a healthy level of outstanding bookings that can be fulfilled once the chips problem is resolved.”

Dato’ Fuaad further added, “UMW expects the automotive sales momentum will continue despite the extended MCO 3.0 especially with the extension of the sales tax exemption to 31 December 2021."
