Another ‘Instafamous’ influencer has severely displeased Malaysians with his false sense of superiority when he happily uploaded a video of his Mercedes-Benz GLE with strobe lights similar to police patrol cars on TikTok. The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has launched an investigation and is in the process of tracking down the influencer for further investigation.
The 20-second video of the SUV showing off its strobe lights and then making use of it to squeeze through heavy traffic went viral on TikTok last week. The video raised a few eyebrows as social media users question if it was legal in Malaysia.
According to Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), it is not legal.
Bukit Aman JSPT Director Datuk Azisman Alias told Harian Metro that the use of strobe lights is a violation of the Road Transport Act 1987. As such, JSPT has launched an investigation on the GLE in the video.
Once JSPT has tracked down the owner, they will carry out the appropriate punishment for not just the misuse of the strobe light but also driving on the emergency lane.
It is believed that the car is owned by TikTok influencer Shahrizan_boy, the ‘public figure’ who first uploaded the video on this account, and his personal assistant.
