The government has plans to open up Langkawi as a green bubble for fully vaccinated tourists as they carry out accelerated vaccination exercise for residents on the island.
National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar revealed the plans during a virtual engagement session with the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) on Thursday.
He notes that plans for Langkawi will follow in the footsteps of neighbouring popular tourist islands Bali, Indonesia and Phuket, Thailand.
Both islands are currently running pilot programmes on the effect on the Covid-19 situation when they open the islands to fully vaccinated foreigners.
If the programme is successful, Langkawi will be opened to fully vaccinated tourists. These tourists will be able to fly to the island and enjoy the attractions there, but they will not be allowed to come to the mainland.
Khairy also emphasises that the third quarter of 2021 will be a crucial point for vaccination. He hopes that towards the end of the third quarter Malaysia will be poise to enter the third phase of the recovery plan.
Khairy is also optimistic that the government can start thinking about opening the borders with countries that are confident with our management of the Covid-19 situation.
At the moment, the minister is already in talks with Singaporean authorities on recognition of the MySejahtera application. This will mean that Singapore and Malaysia will have a joint recognition of vaccination passports.
