No longer a city car, this is the China-only BMW i3 Sedan – a 3 Series EV

  • The electric version of the BMW 3 Series
  • Exclusive to China market only
  • RWD with 285 PS/400 Nm, 526 km range

The all-electric BMW i3 eDrive35L has been officially unveiled. BMW says it will be assembled exclusively for the Chinese market at the BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. plant in Lydia, Shenyang.

Not to be confused with the i3 city car, which was discontinued last year, this is essentially an all-electric (EV) BMW 3 Series. So, here comes the electric bits you need to know.

The BMW i3 Sedan has a single electric motor with 285 PS/400 Nm that spins the rear wheels. 0-100 km/h sprint time is claimed at 6.2 seconds. It gets a 70.3 kWh battery that allows for a 526 km driving range in the China light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC).

Whilst not stated, the BMW i3 Sedan’s charging port appears to be GB/T, which has separate connectors for AC and DC charging. The AC charging port is located at the front left fender, while DC port is at the rear right quarter panel.

Maximum AC and DC charging is up to 11 kW and 95 kW respectively. Charging time from 10 to 80 percent battery charge takes 35 minutes at the maximum DC charging rate.

The BMW i3 Sedan measures up at 4,872 mm long, 1,846 mm wide and 1,481 mm tall with an extended wheelbase of 2,966 mm denoted by the ‘L’ suffix.

BMW says that the i3 Sedan’s suspension is tuned to Chinese road conditions, carried out by the BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. R&D division in Shenyang, which also adapted some of the car’s componentry to the requirements of the supply chain in China.

The BMW i3 Sedan is said to come with the BMW Gen5 eDrive powertrain components already familiar from the BMW iX3, BMW i4 and BMW iX. Plus, the BMW OS8 operating system and new digital features and services will be making their 3 Series debuts.
