After a newspaper reported that Malaysia has the 12th worst roads in the world, the Works Ministry has come out to lambast the report calling it “inaccurate”, “misleading”, and “gave a negative perception of the overall quality of roads in Malaysia”.
According to The Star, the ministry released a statement on Tuesday (4-October-2022) to deny the news report. It also questions the source of the article and the method the source used to come to its result.
The source in question is Zutobi, an online driver’s education company. The company calculated the scores based on only four factors: road quality, improvements of road quality, road deaths, and the relative size of the road network.
Other than that, the company only took into account data from 59 countries.
Instead, the ministry quoted another report by Utusan Malaysia published on 10-August-2022 titled “Road quality in Malaysia among 21 best in the world”.
The study was based on road quality rankings issued by The Global Economy using the data obtained from the Global Competitiveness index.
"The study also cited authentic sources from an executive study involving 14,000 business leaders from 144 countries who participated in the World Economic Forum based in Davos, Switzerland," the statement read.
According to the Utusan Malaysia report, Malaysia scored 5.3 points out of seven points to be placed 21st. The score surpasses countries like Sweden (23), Canada (31), Australia (33), and Britain (37). Malaysia ranks second in Southeast Asia, right after Singapore.
The ministry claims that they are constantly monitoring research reports to ensure the delivery of the best services for the people. They also highlighted that the ministry has various ongoing commitments carried out by the ministry in maintaining the quality of roads in the country.
As of August, the ministry claims to have repaired 6,656 potholes in the country. They also stated that they have also been allocated over RM 900,000 in allocations for road maintenance costs throughout the country.
