Unofficial specs revealed for CKD Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia; 1.5T with CVT, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, ADAS

A brochure showcasing the specs of the upcoming Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia has been made privy to WapCar.my, and initial checks show them to be legitimate enough instead of some random speculation.

Still, it's worth noting that these are still unofficial at the point of writing - Chery Malaysia hasn't said announced the car's specs just yet, so while the final products may not be too different from what's here, there could still be changes to come.

Specs of Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia

First things first - the Omoda 5 in Malaysia is said to be sold in two variants, the base C and the higher-end H.

Despite the various choices available elsewhere, it seems Malaysians will be getting the 1.5-litre turbo (156 PS/230 Nm) four-cylinder engine paired to a CVT-type automatic transmission with 9 virtual ratios, just like the car that was previewed here in October last year.

For the record the SUV can be had with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-potter that produces 197 PS and 290 Nm, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT), in China.

Ours is also said to be front-wheel drive (FWD), with a regular MacPherson suspension array upfront, and a torsion beam at the rear. An electric power steering (EPS) module with tilt and telescopic adjustment completes the handling side of things.

Disc brakes all around, and the document reads that both variants will get 18-inch wheels wrapped in 215/55 profile tyres. Both variants get an electric parking brake (EPB) with auto hold function.

An LED headlight array with LED daytime running lights (DRL), acoustic glass, a 10.25-inch head unit (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay!) and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster make up the standard specs.

Both cars also get dual-zone air-conditioning, ambient lighting, remote engine start, wireless charger, and heated side mirrors, among others.

In terms of differences, the C variant gets faux leather with fabric seats, while the H has the full faux leather treatment. The pricier variant also benefits from an 8-speaker Sony setup (basic, 6-speaker audio in the C), 6-way power adjustable driver's seat, ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate, sunroof, and sequential turn signals.

Both cars come complete with ADAS features, comprising of these standard features:

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
  • Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK)
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Follow (ACC w/ LSF)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Lane Departure Prevention (LDP)
  • Integrated Cruise Assist (ICA)
  • Traffic Jam Assist (TJA)

A 360-degree panoramic camera and several other features (Speed Limit Assist, Speed Control Function, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Adaptation) are paywalled to the H variant, however.

Chery Omoda 5 price in Malaysia

No indicative pricing yet by Chery Malaysia.

Some context on the pricing, in Indonesia the Omoda 5 ranges between IDR 329.8 million (~RM 100k) to IDR 399.8 million (~RM 121k), undercutting the HR-V which ranges from IDR 375.9 million (~RM 114k) to IDR 414.6 million (~RM 126k). Their specs are quite similar to ours, so it remains to be seen if Chery can pull off the same stunt here.

We're also told that the Omoda 5 will be locally-assembled (CKD) right from the outset, though its local manufacturing partners and plant hasn't been made public just yet.

The Chery Omoda 5 also won't be the company's only salvo here, as the large Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max will also be coming in by June this year.
