VinFast sedan & SUV gets full 5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating, because it's a BMW underneath

Vietnam’s first local automaker, VinFast, made headlines in 2018 when they announced their first sedan and SUV at the Paris International Motor Show.

The sedan is called the LUX A2.0 while their SUV is named LUX SA2.0. Both models were awarded a full 5-Stars ASEAN NCAP crash safety rating in November 2019 with an overall score of 88.15 and 84.46 for the sedan and SUV, respectively. Scores are measured on a 100-point scale.

The LUX A2.0 and LUX SA.20 are both based on the previous-generation BMW platforms – F10 5 Series and F15 X5. Even so, both platforms still meet high crash safety standards, it is a BMW after all.

Although both cars are not equipped with any form of Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) – not even Blind Spot Monitor, the LUX A2.0 and SA2.0 comes with the essential safety kit.

These include 6 airbags, ABS, electronic stability control, hill start assist, and ISOFIX mounting points.

Both VinFast sedan and SUV are powered by BMW-sourced N20 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engines pushing out 176 PS/300 Nm and 231 PS/350 Nm respectively. Both engines are paired to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission to drive the rear wheels.

The LUX A2.0 sedan is priced from US$ 47,400 (RM 203k) while the LUX SA2.0 SUV starts from US$ 60,400 (RM 260k).
