Ferrari 296 GTB will debut in Malaysia with RM 2,110 road tax - cheapest for a Ferrari

Ferrari has unveiled its new mid-engine supercar, the 296 GTB, which sits right alongside the Ferrari F8 Tributo. The car’s name combines its total displacement (2992cc) and number of cylinders with the addition of the GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) acronym.

That’s right, this is a Ferrari with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine. Specifically, the 2,992cc means that when it does arrive in Malaysia, it translates to a road tax figure of RM 2,110.

Not only that, it’s electrified to produce a total output of 830 PS. The combustion engine alone is capable of generating 663 PS/740 Nm, and Ferrari claims it’s a new specific power output record of 221 PS/litre for series production cars.

Unlike the Ferrari SF90, the hybrid powertrain drives the rear wheels exclusively, sending power through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Dry weight is 1,470 kg and goes up to around 1,600 kg with fluids. With figures like these, 0-100 km/h is done is 2.9 seconds, while top speed is over 330 km/h.

Ferrari says the 296 GTB has an all-electric range of up to 25 km from the 7.45 kWh high-voltage battery. The electric motor is rated at 167 PS/315 Nm.

In terms of exterior design, it resembles the Ferrari SF90 with the slim headlamps and squared taillamps. And being a modern Ferrari, it’s heavily influenced by aerodynamics with ducts and intakes on crucial areas.

Though unlike some Ferrari models from the previous decade, it’s a rather clean and smooth design with minimal visual clutters. Wheels are 20-inch with staggered tyre sizes, 245/35 for the fronts and 305/35 for the rears.

Inside, Ferrari has embraced the age of digital interface which means capacitive buttons all around the cabin. There’s no central screen for the infotainment system and everything is displayed on the digital instrument cluster.

Passengers can have their own screen if optioned, which gives an indicator on how frightened they should be when riding shotgun.

Price? Well, you know what they say if you have to ask. But European sites are reporting a 269,000 Euro (RM 1.3m) price with deliveries beginning in 2022.
