As the Northern Hemisphere experiences a period of hot, warm, and humid weather known as summer, Ford has put out a video reminding owners to never leave their children or pets unattended.
According to research done by advocacy group KidsandCars.org, a child’s body overheats 3 to 5 times faster than an adult’s. Similarly, hot weather can also be dangerous for pets left in vehicles as it takes just 6 minutes for a dog to die in a hot car according to RSPCA Australia.
To highlight these dangers, Ford Europe commissioned an ice sculptor to create an Ice Baby and an Ice Dog and placed them inside a Ford Focus Wagon at their “Weather Factory” facility in Cologne, Germany.
The temperature outside of the car was set to 35° C but within 19 minutes, temperatures inside the car had risen to 50° C. Almost instantly, the ice started to melt away.
This experiment is meant to promote Ford’s Rear Occupant Alert that offers a simple reminder to drivers to check the back seats by displaying a visual alert and an audible warning sound. However, we don’t have such a feature in Malaysia but it is certainly a reminder for parents and pet owners.
With Malaysia experiencing hot and humid weather almost throughout the year, it is important for parents to never leave their children unattended in a hot car. Even if it is for a short while as we see that the temperature inside would rise higher than the outside.
