Axia-priced EVs heading to Indonesia! Wuling Mini EV and E300 to launch in 2022

Although the Wuling Mini EV and the Wuling E300 were displayed at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS 2021), these little electric vehicles (EV) are not on sale. The EVs were displayed at the show to introduce Wuling’s Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) to the Indonesian market and to garner interest from the locals.

So, if this is just a showcase, when will the EVs be launched? Danang Wiratmoko, Head of Product Planning at Wuling Motors, hinted that the Indonesian market will only see the launch of both EVs once Wuling in China has introduced the new generation GSEV platform the EVs are built on.

The new generation platform is tipped to be introduced as soon as 2022, so Indonesia will likely also see the official launch of the tiny EVs next year.

Wuling Mini EV

As Wuling Motors in Indonesia have plans to locally-assemble EVs like the Mini EV and the E300 you see here, it is only logical for the manufacturer to wait until a new generation is launched before production starts.

Danang Wiratmoko also alluded that the new upcoming Wuling Nano EV will also make its way to the archipelago after it is officially launched in China.

Although he did not let on anything else, he did reveal that the new Wuling GSEV platform will be very flexible and can be easily customised according to the needs of the target market.

The display at the GIIAS 2021 is a means to introduce Indonesians to the GSEV platform and what to expect with the new generation. Danang divulged that the platform is based on three main points: the battery, electric motor, and electronic control system.

One of the advantages of the new GSEV platform will be the ability to charge the car using conventional power sources at home. Future EVs built on the new GSEV platform will be able to use 220 volts of electricity as well as fast charging.

As for the price of the EVs, Danang is adamant that the prices of these cars will be affordable to make EVs more accessible to the general public.

In China, prices for the Mini EV ranges from CNY 28,800 to CNY 48,600 (~RM 19,000 to RM 31,900) while the Wuling E300 goes for CNY 65,800 to CNY 85,800 (~RM 43,000 to RM 56,000). The prices in Indonesia is promised to not stray too far from its CNY price.

Right now, the perception of EVs in Indonesia is that they’re expensive and inaccessible to the majority of the public, Wuling Motors hope that the GSEV models will help change the perception of that and further contribute to Indonesia’s aim to phase out internal combustion engine cars by 2050.
