Mitsubishi Airtrek EV makes Guangzhou Auto Show debut; First fully electric Mitsubishi SUV

Mitsubishi Motors' Chinese joint-venture company, GAC Mitsubishi Motors (GMMC), has launched the brand’s first-ever full-electric SUV. Introductory prices for the Mitsubishi Airtrek EV start from CNY 210,000 to CNY 240,000 (~RM 138,432 to RM 158,208) and the electric vehicle (EV) is expected to go on sale in March 2022.

But first, about that name. Although the name Airtrek is a familiar to us, the EV is not related to any of its predecessors that came before it.

The Airtrek measures 4,630 x 1,920 x 1,728 mm in length, width, and height while the wheelbase measures 2,830 mm in length. As you can see from the proportions, Mitsubishi is marketing the Airtrek to go up against SUVs like the Honda CR-V.

Mitsubishi Airtrek Dimensions

Length (mm) 4,630 4,519 4,623
Width (mm) 1,920 1,831 1,855

It takes just one look to know that the Airtrek is a Mitsubishi thanks to the front grille that bears large similarities to the Mitsubishi Outlander, Mitsubishi Triton, and even the Mitsubishi Xpander, albeit the Airtrek not as sharp or imposing.

The use of chrome strips gives the car a futuristic feel. All in all, the Airtrek’s design can be described as simple and elegant as the lines flow gently from the chunky front to the simple rear end.

Inside, Mitsubishi has introduced a completely different design language. The dual-tone colour scheme gives the Airtrek an elegant feel while the clean buttonless dashboard makes one feel like they’re sitting in a futuristic spacecraft.

Powertrain details are still scarce at this point, but Mitsubishi does claim that the compact SUV’s 70 kWh battery is capable of a 520 km range on a full charge. Max power output is rated at 184 PS.
