Opel Mokka and Citroen C4 spotted in Malaysia – What are they doing here?

Here’s the spot of the day – an Opel Mokka (the white SUV) and Citroen C4 doing the rounds of testing. Interestingly, neither of these brands have an appointed distributor in Malaysia (Berjaya Auto only provides after sales for Citroen). So what are they doing here?

Recall that Opel and Citroen are part of the Stellantis corporation, who recently announced that they have obtained full ownership of the Naza Automotive Manufacturing (NAM) plant in Gurun, Kedah. The plant will serve as Stellantis’ regional hub for Southeast Asia.

However, there are no immediate plans for the reintroduction of Opel or Citroen in Malaysia, so our best guess is the cars are being tested for internal development only. Hot-climate testing perhaps.

Back to the cars, the Opel Mokka and Citroen C4 are underpinned by PSA’s EMP1 platform. Both share the same set of powertrains including the 1.2-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that makes up to 130 PS/230 Nm, mated to either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic.

Both cars also have a fully-electric powertrain, with a 136 PS/260 Nm electric motor and a 50 kWh battery pack. Driving range in a WLTP cycle is rated at 338 km for the electric Mokka and 350 km for the electric C4.

The second-generation Peugeot 2008 also shares the same platform and powertrain, and is expected to make its local debut as soon as later this month.
