Basic information of my car:

2016 Peugeot 408 1.6 Turbo Griffe

Reasons why I bought this car

I’m interested in cars and I enjoy driving, no matter the model or brand name.
Cars I drive before includes, BMW 3 and 5 series, Mercedes 200, Volvo 300 series,
Honda and Toyota saloon cars and MPVs, and Suzuki 4WD
.

Car Selection Process

I wanted a practical saloon car, with a powerful 1.6 liter engine or below.
Purpose is, to keep low operating costs.

My budget was around MYR 100k for a new car, with good warranty
(to avoid unplanned repair cost in the initial years of ownership).

List of cars meeting my criteria are, Proton Preve Premium CVT, Peugeot 408 1.6 Turbo, Honda Civic 1.5TC, and Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI.

Detail comparison below:

I like the design of the Peugeot 408. It looks stylish and upmarket.
Its interior feels spacious and pleasant. And the boot space looks biggest.
All the necessary comfort and safety features already come as standard (in 2016).
Its engine feels powerful and, driving it feels confident and comfortable.

I do aware of the brand reputation in country (and cost associated with it).
I thus considered the full purchase amount as my expenses.

Moreover, I got a good deal for a Peugeot 408 1.6 Turbo Griffe.
It already got the add on black pack styling and 18 inch dark alloy wheels,
leather interior with red stitching and color touchscreen multimedia system.
Therefore avoid spending for modification.

Furthermore, its styling reminds me of the Peugeot 405 Mi16.

User experience

I have driven my Peugeot 408 for more than 91k km during the 5 years time.
I drive it to work and to grocery store, and for weekend getaway outstation.
I drove it down a number of times to my regional office in Singapore,
and I drove it up a few times to my project office in Bangkok, Thailand
(we were grounded for more than a year, due to the pandemic).

My Peugeot 408’s average fuel consumption is 12 km per liter combined
(9 km per liter in city and up to 16 km per liter on highway).

I enjoy driving my Peugeot 408, especially long distance.
Its large windows and high driving seating position give a good visibility.
The engine is smooth when cruising, yet powerful for acceleration.
Its handling is outstanding, especially with 225/40 tires on 18 inch rims.

I send my 408 for routine service to Peugeot service center until today.
I find the car generally reliable, only a few problems happen.
There were recalls for high pressure fuel pump and aircon compressor,
and warranty for defects identified during routine services.
Other repairs are normal wear and tear.

It still feels solid and its running cost to date is still reasonable for me.

Details below:

Remark:

Service cost includes labour and consumables

Unplanned cost:

MYR 5,180.10 body repair

MYR 475.00 rim repair
Summary running cost

Pros of my car:

  • Same 1.6 turbocharged engine in use by the new Peugeot 3008 and 5008.

  • So, no worries about engine parts availability.

  • One variant of the engine used by Peugeot RCZ is the THP270 with 270 hp.

  • So, the Prince engine is potential for tuning project, as well.

Cons of my car:

  • The standard Arkamys audio delivers a very good sound quality.

  • However, support needed for the Windows CE OS on the multimedia system.

  • Just like on computer, the software got bugs and sometimes crashes.

Ratings:

Total Score: 4

Performance: 4.5

Quality & Features: 3.5

Space: 4.5

Ride Comfort: 4.5

Fuel Economy: 3.5

Price & Cost: 3.5

Summary :

The Peugeot 408 1.6 Turbo is enjoyable car to drive, comfortable and spacious.
And I’m looking forward to enjoy travelling with the 408 more in coming years.
One thing on my bucket list is, to go on epic road trip with it to more countries.
