Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on-going East Asian tour saw him visiting Korea, Japan, and China. During his diplomatic mission to China, his Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia Mr Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan met with Mr Zhang Shengshan, Chery International Executive Vice President, to discuss potential cooperation for the development of clean mobility solutions.

Neither parties revealed outcome of their meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing, but a spokesperson for Chery said, “Mr Zhang presented Chery’s investment plans in Indonesia, including for electric vehicles, and introduced the planning of technology, product, battery and other related industrial chains of the company. Highly recognising the Chery Group’s international and technical strengths, leaders including Minister Luhut and the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs agreed with Chery’s investment plans in Indonesia. Through increased understanding of Chery Automobile, they expressed full confidence in Chery’s development in Indonesia, endeavouring to coordinate with relevant departments for enough support to promote Chery’s development in Indonesia.”

Zhang added that Southeast Asia will become an essential component of Chery’s further globalisation, especially Indonesia, the country with the largest economy and population in ASEAN.

Previously, Chery has confirmed plans to build a vehicle manufacturing plant in Indonesia, but did not disclose the location.

Zhang also added that Indonesia is rich in mineral resources, and its nickel reserves rank first in the world, which is extremely beneficial to the development of the new energy vehicle industry. Chery expects to cumulatively launch nine models in Indonesia, mainly pure electric and plug-in hybrid models.

Moreover, the company will further develop the industrial chain in Indonesia, including the integration of mineral resources, batteries and vehicle production, and contribute greatly to economic and social development through promoting the transformation and upgrading of Indonesia’s automotive industry.
