The Chinese Ministry of Transportation has drafted rules to regulate the self-driving industry along with a reminder to the public to adopt autonomous vehicles, also known as driverless cars, in passenger transport with care.
In other words, this also means that the government has given the official green light for the use of autonomous vehicles as taxis. However, they only encourage the use of autonomous taxis in easily controlled scenarios such as low traffic situations.
"The management of transportation with autonomous driving vehicles should stick to the principles with safety as the top priority," the Ministry of Transportation said in the drafted rules.
China has been locked in a race to commercialise autonomous driving with the United States of America. Both countries have been introducing cutting-edge technologies in sensors and mapping as well as regulations to further make driverless public transports safe for the public.
