Korea has big dreams to modernise its transportation system as the country recently announced its plans to commercialise at least one Level 4 autonomous vehicle by 2027. It also hopes to see more than half of the cars launched in the country to come with Level 4 autonomous driving capability by 2035.
That’s not all, the country’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport also stated its intention to be the world’s third nation to commercialise at least one vehicle with Level 3 autonomous driving capability this year, after the USA and Japan.
Level 4 autonomous capabilities allow a vehicle to drive itself under specific circumstances, but the driver has the option to control it at any time. The vehicle should be able to pull over on its own if it deems the conditions unsafe even if the driver does not respond to a request to intervene.
To achieve its aim, the ministry plans to overhaul its existing transportation system and set up safety standards and insurance programmes for autonomous cars. They also plan to set up new laws for Level 4 autonomous bus services.
To further support its vision, the government also plans to establish real-time telecommunications systems for communication between autonomous cars along 110,000 km of roads in major cities by 2030.
They hope to establish a system for the vehicles to communicate with the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in major cities and roads by 2030 as well.
The vision is not that far-fetched, as Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Motor Group’s parts supplier, introduced a Level 4 self-driving concept car known as the M.Vision back in 2020.
Hyundai’s M.Vision doesn’t just cover the standard ‘car’ concept, but it also covers cargo van and bus concepts. Hence, the government’s belief that the goal to release at least one Level 4 autonomous vehicle by 2027 is achievable.
