Cheapest EV in Malaysia soon? The BYD e6 is coming and here's what you need to know

The announcement of the distributorship agreement between BYD and Sime Darby Motors has confirmed the launch of two BYD EV models, the BYD Atto 3 and BYD e6. In this article, we'll brief you through the BYD e6.

Separately, here's our guide for the BYD Atto 3.

What is the BYD e6?

The BYD e6 is an all-electric MPV that’s about the size of a Toyota Innova, measuring 4,695 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, 1,670 mm tall, with a wheelbase stretching at 2,800 mm.

Size comparison
Dimensions e6 Innova Serena
Length (mm) 4,695 4,735 4,770
Width (mm) 1,810 1,830 1,740
Height (mm) 1,670 1,830 1,865
Wheelbase (mm) 2,800 2,750 2,860

Like the Atto 3, the e6 is also front-wheel drive with a 95 PS/180 Nm electric motor. 0-100 km/h stats are not provided but its top speed is claimed at 130 km/h.

It has a 71.7 kWh battery, providing a WLTC (used interchangeably with WLTP) range of up to 522 km. The onboard charger allows up 40 kW AC charging while DC charging is up to 60 kW.

Standard features in the Singapore-spec BYD e6 include 4 airbags, powered tailgate, 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and 17-inch wheels. No ADAS here.

Singapore has the BYD e6 officially on sale in our region, but its COE-influenced pricing makes it difficult to draw a comparison. In Thailand, the e6 is priced at THB 1,390,000 (around RM 170k).

In Australia, however, the e6 is reportedly priced at just under AUD 40,000 (around RM 120k), which is cheaper than the Atto 3.

There's no mention of the origin of our Malaysia-spec BYD e6 during the announcement, but initial batches could be imported from China before the upcoming production plant in Thailand becomes online.
