Priced from RM 289,888, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is launched in Malaysia with 2 variants

It’s been a long time coming and after several cheeky teases from Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM), the distributor for the marque has at long last officially launched the Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan in Malaysia, with prices starting from RM 289,888.

The World Car of the Year 2023, the Ioniq 6 joins the World Car of the Year 2022, its sibling the Ioniq 5, in doubling the Malaysian Ioniq family.

As for the 2 variants that’s sold in Malaysia, it’s as follows:

  • Ioniq 6 Max RWD – RM 289,888
  • Ioniq 6 Max AWD – RM 319,888

Like most other EVs, the Ioniq 6 is slippery through the air, boasting an aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.21 Cd, making it one of, but not the most, aerodynamic production cars in the world. That record is currently held by the Mercedes-Benz EQS.

While the design of the Ioniq 5 is largely inspired by its past, particularly the Giorgetto Giugiaro-penned Hyundai Pony which was Hyundai’s first model built from the ground up, the Ioniq 6’s unusual but streamlined shape is very much a nod towards the marque’s aggressive plans for the future.

It’s built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that’s shared with the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

The entry-level Ioniq 6 Max RWD variant features a sole electric motor on the rear axle that makes 228 PS and 350 Nm of torque. It’ll do the century sprint in 7.4-second.

As for the Ioniq 6 Max AWD, it has a second electric motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive. Performance here is 325 PS and 605 Nm of torque. The sprint from 0-100 kph drops to 5.1-second.

Both variants share the same high-capacity 77.4 kW lithium-ion polymer battery, yielding impressive WLTP ranges of 614 km for the Max RWD and 519 km for the Max AWD.

As for charging, the Ioniq 6 supports both 400 V and 800 V charging infrastructure with the latter a standard offering. With a 350 kW charger, the Ioniq 6 can be juiced from 10 percent to 80 percent in 18 minutes. Using an 11 kW AC charger will take 7.1-hour for to go from 0-100 percent charge.

Furthermore, the Ioniq 6 also features the vehicle-to-load (V2L) function that turns the car into a massive power bank on wheels. Through its external or internal power outlet, the EV can charge other electrical devices and serve as a backup power supply during emergencies. It could even be used to rescue a stranded EV.

In terms of safety, the 5-star Euro NCAP Ioniq 6 features 7 airbags and the Hyundai SmartSense suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The suite comprises:

  • Autonomous cruise control with stop/go
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Forward collision braking
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Highway driving assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Surround view monitor

The Ioniq 6 brings HSDM’s EV offerings to 3 models, joining the aforementioned Ioniq 5 and the most affordable EV in its range, the Kona Electric.

Complementing the retro futuristic theme is the Parametric Pixel lighting, exclusive only to Ioniq models. You’ll find it present in numerous places including the headlights and taillights, rear spoiler-mounted third brake lamp and even the steering wheel.

Infotainment is courtesy of 2 seamlessly connected 12.3-inch screens, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless phone charging, eco-friendly materials and multi-colour ambient lighting to create multiple moods.

The pricing is inclusive of an 8-year/160,000 km battery warranty and a 3-year/60,000 km warranty for the car. However for an additional RM 10,000, the standard vehicle warranty is upgradeable to 5-year/100,000 km that is attached with a 3-year/50,000 km free service package.

Additionally, the first 30 owners will receive a free 1-year Shell Recharge Gold membership upon vehicle delivery that opens up attractive charging rates for them.

You can catch the Ioniq 6 in its streamlined metal at the Ioniq 6 Experience being held this weekend at the Ballroom Building of the Setia City Convention Centre. Test drives and a more immersive, exclusive overall experience will be available to visitors.

Bookings for the Ioniq 6 can be made at any authorised Hyundai sales outlet nationwide a well as on the online booking platform Cl!cktoBuy.

Lastly, you can have your Ioniq 6 in any of the 5 colours available; Abyss Black Pearl, Nocturne Grey Matte, Biophilic Blue Pearl, Dive Blue Solid and Gravity Gold Matte.
