2023 Proton S50 likely to get X90's 1.5-litre 3-cyl mild-hybrid; four variants rumoured, launching next month?

You're not the only one who feels like the year began just yesterday, but hey, we're now less than three months away from 2024 – which also means we've seen most of the models that are to launch in Malaysia this year, save for a few more that will bookend 2023.

The list isn't very long now, and written at the top of it is the 2023 Proton S50 – like most of the brand's recent offerings, it's been churning in the rumour mills as Malaysians await its proper arrival here.

The latest spyshot of the S50

One such rumour is that the model is bound to follow Proton's recent model convention: four variants are said to be offered, ranging from Standard, Premium, Executive, and Flagship. Perhaps this better explains the difference in specifications we've seen through the many spyshots thus far – some have a sunroof, while others don't.

Proton's first mild-hybrid sedan?

X90's engine bay; same news for the S50?

Speaking of which, it's likely that the Proton X90's 1.5-litre turbocharged mild-hybrid engine will make its way into the S50, quite possibly making it Proton's first-ever electrified sedan. Whether or not it will power all purported four variants or just the range-topper remains to be seen.

However, a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine is almost certain, based on Proton's investment into a new engine plant. That said, power outputs and further details are still unclear.

If this is the case, then it's not the only change that tailors the S50 to the Malaysian market. Remember that it was once spotted with an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) radar upfront; an improvement over its Geely Emgrand donor car that makes do without such technology. The Emgrand too doesn't get a turbocharged engine in its home market – only a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder.

These kinds of tweaks aren't unfamiliar to Proton as they've done the same before with the X50 (inclusion of rear air-cond vents) and more recently the X90 with its multi-link suspension setup.

WTC Automotif (WTCA), a subsidiary of the Tan Chong Group and the authorized distributor for GAC cars in Malaysia, has confirmed that the GAC Emkoo will be launched in Malaysia. Its arrival here follows the introduction of the CKD GAC GS3 Emzoom. What’s the GAC Emkoo? For starters, it’s a C-segment SUV that goes against the like of the Honda CR-V, Proton X70, Mazda CX-5, etc. It’s based on the GPMA (GAC Global Platform Modular Architecture) platform that also underpins the GAC GS3 Emzoom. WTC Automotif (WTCA), the official distributor of GAC models in Malaysia, is reloading its ammo in the B-segment SUV competition with the all-new second-generation GAC GS3 (named GS3 Emzoom in some markets). We were given the opportunity sample the GS3 Emzoom in China, courtesy of EWTCA and GAC Motor, but more on that shortly. First, a refresh of the GAC GS3 Emzoom. Built from the ground up on GAC's latest GPMA (GAC Global Platform Modular Architecture) platform, the GS3 Emzoom promises substant
Honda Malaysia has announced that pre-orders for the all-new 2023 Honda CR-V have been opened. Locally assembled (CKD) at Honda's plant in Melaka, the sixth generation of Honda's best-selling SUV is planned to be launched in December. The all-new 6th-gen CR-V made its world debut in July 2022 in Canada though it would take another 9 months before it made its Southeast Asian debut at the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) in March. The all-new CR-V would eventually be launched in Indone
Finally...the all-new 2024 Toyota Camry (XV80) has made its global debut moments ago at the annual LA Auto Show in California. The expansive event – which uses 760,000 square feet of exhibition space – also saw the introduction of a new Crown SUV variant. But anyway, on with the Camry. Today's model is the eighth generation of the long-standing model, replacing the prior XV70 that's been around since 2017. Despite the new model code, think of it more as a deep refresh instead of an all-new model
Apart from Tesla, it seems almost impossible for anyone to make money as a pure-play EV manufacturer. Remember that BYD still relies on PHEVs, which have combustion engines, to contribute nearly half of its sales, so we can’t refer to BYD as a pure-play EV manufacturer. Volvo’s EV-only Polestar brand is the latest casualty in the brutal EV space, as gross profit for January to September 2023 is down 63 percent. Gross profit decreased USD 36.3 million, or down 63 percent to 21.2 million US dollar
