Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door Reviews

Overview

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S – Overview

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia introduced the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S in 2019. Similar to the other AMG models as well as the S-Class convertible, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S forms part of the Dream Cars line-up.

Fully imported from Germany, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S was last priced at RM1,798,888 with sales tax. There is no updated pricing with the sales tax exemption, as the model like the rest of the Dream Cars line-up has its final pricing upon application/order.

While the name is made to create a lineage with the AMG GT sports car, the GT 4-door is closer to rivals such as BMW M8 Gran Coupe, Audi RS7 Sportback and Porsche Panamera Turbo S.

Exterior

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S – Exterior

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door has 4-door coupe styling, featuring a long bonnet, a steeply sloping roof and a short rear boot. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, the AMG GT 4-door is larger and taller, and the dimensions ensure presence at the poshest building lobbies.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S gets the range-topping Multibeam LED headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus next to the new Panamericana front grille with bold vertical slats.
Being a four-door coupe, the door windows are frameless.

The rear meanwhile features slim taillamps to mimic the AMG GT sports car, with a fixed rear wing on the tailgate (it is a fastback and not a sedan) and a deep diffuser design with integrated exhaust tips. These add-ons are also part of the AMG Aerodynamics package.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S for Malaysia also comes with the AMG Carbon Package as well as Night package that has the front and rear bumper inserts in high gloss black. A single pane tilt and slide moonroof is also fitted as standard on the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S. Being placed at such a high price point, power-closing doors are added as expected by the customers.

As for tyre sizes, the Mercedes-Benz GT 4-door 63 S comes with a huge diameter set up in a staggered arrangement, with 21-inch forged rims wrapped with 275/35R21 size at the front and 315/30R21 at the rear in conventional sidewalls (non-RFT) and ultra-high-performance tyre models.

The dashboard of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S continues to utilize the proven layout from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class range, which is also used in the CLS-Class, featuring the widescreen cockpit of two 12.3-inch high-resolution screens as driver’s display and infotainment plus vehicle settings.

The dashboard and upper sections of the door panels are lined with Artico material (simulated leather) and contrasting double stitching. The central trim finisher is matt finished AMG genuine carbon fibre that extends to the door panels.
The lower console of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S mimics the AMG GT sports car by having a wide panel with eight customisable switches with tiny screens to convey the power and performance of eight cylinders.

A shift-by-wire gear selector is placed here too, in between the bank of switches and decorated by the AMG carbon fibre inlays. Exclusive to the V8 powered models is the AMG performance steering wheel that is customisable with shortcut keys, made into the highest quality thanks to a coloured display. The AMG drive programs (Comfort, Sport, Race etc.) can be selected directly via the dial controller, with the LCD displaying the selection.

Engine noises are also pleasantly amplified with the surround sound system with a total of 640 Watts.

Powertrain

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S – Powertrain

Engine

Perhaps the largest four-door coupe from Mercedes-AMG also received the most powerful unit from the company – 639 PS at 5,500 to 6,500 rpm and 900 Nm of torque from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. The high-revving Biturbo engine in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S comes with dynamic engine mounts, reducing vibration plus minimising energy losses by making the powertrain rigidly mounted.

Minimised mass movements of the powertrain also means less corrective action needs to be taken by the driver when steering the gigantic 2.2-tonne Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S comes standard with an AMG Performance exhaust system with a variable flap and the most powerful V8 Biturbo engine from the brand sounds very ferocious at full tilt.

Transmission

Power is sent to all wheels via a new 9-speed automatic transmission called AMG Speedshift MCT. A wet multi-plate start-off clutch replaces the torque converter coupling, ensuring even more immediate response and sensation.
In manual mode, the transmission stays in the selected gear and does not automatically shift up when the engine hits the limiter.

Chassis

The body structure of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S has been reinforced in key areas including a strengthened front and rear axle sub-frame. To ensure a stable and controllable rear axle as dictated by the driver’s intentions, fitted as standard are an exclusive rear-wheel steering and electronically-controlled limited-slip differential (LSD).

Electronically-controlled adaptive shock absorbers called AMG Ride Control with regular steel springs are standard, but what’s special about the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S is the AMG Dynamics handling package, controlling the stability system as well as 4Matic+ AWD through different levels plus six AMG Dynamic Select driving modes including Race and Individual.

Stopping power in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S is meanwhile provided by 390 mm brake discs grabbed 6-piston calipers in front while the rear has 360 mm brake disc and single-piston calipers in yellow.

Drivetrain

Power is sent to all-wheel four wheels via a permanent all-wheel drive system called the Mercedes-AMG Performance 4Matic+. AMG wants you to have fun in the AMG GT 4-door 63 S, feeling the sensation of 900 Nm so a ‘Drift’ mode has been inserted into the Performance 4Matic+ system. In ‘Drift’ mode, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S becomes a very tail-happy rear-wheel drive large super sedan.

Driving Performance

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S – Driving Performance

Engine performance

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S promises plenty of performance as well as noise from the Biturbo V8 with 639 PS and 900 Nm. 0 to 100 km/h is completed in just 3.2 seconds, with a top speed limited to 315 km/h. 70% of the AMG driving experience comes from the engine and this new Biturbo V8 engine does not disappoint the sensation of moving around in a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S.

Thanks to its high amounts of torque, the V8 Biturbo engine feels eager in town, with a well-calibrated throttle ensuring it doesn’t lunge forward or abruptly. One barely use over half of the pedal’s range to commute in town, as there is so much power and response from the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S powertrain.

Transmission performance

The shifts of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S AMG Speedshift transmission are smooth and well-calibrated. Comfort mode shifts up early, while Sport+ emphasis on fast shifting and red-lining the V8 engine for all the 639 horsepower. Plenty of exhaust pops and burbles too! The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S behaves like a proper luxury coupe in urban and slow commute through smoothness and refinement.

Steering and handling

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S comes with so much chassis technology, it rides fairly well for its size. There is only so much damping steel springs can provide, thus the ride does feel uncomfortable at low speeds. Steering accuracy on the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S is on par with a BMW M8, and the chassis and electronic controls are so well calibrated that they deliver power very effectively and progressively.

The AMG Dynamics handling control package in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S and the rear axle steering certainly adds plenty of agility to the 2.2-tonne super sedan. This also adds to parking convenience. The new Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S not only goes really fast in a straight line, but also feel incredibly at home at corners and in Sepang Circuit.

Ride Comfort

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S – Ride Comfort

Soundproofing

The soundproofing of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S is not bad, given this is a proper AMG vehicle. The nice engine and exhaust noises are well audible in the cabin, but on a highway drive, tyre noise roar is acceptable given the performance level of the coupe.

Passenger comfort

In the aspect of passenger comfort, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S is rather uncomfortable. ‘Comfort‘ mode barely passes as comfortable, as the steel springs are too stiff to provide proper isolation over rough roads and patches.
The large 21-inch wheels add to the unwanted feedback too.

Fuel Consumption

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S – Fuel Economy

The fuel consumption of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S is rated at 13.1 litres per 100 km (7.6 km/L). Given the amount of performance and noise, this figure is fairly respectable.

Conclusion

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S – Conclusion

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S is another addition to the growling list of Mercedes-AMG models with a V8 Biturbo engine, from the C-class all the way to the GLS SUV. We are not entirely sure what the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-door 63 S is set out to achieve or please the owners.

The styling has no lineage to the AMG GT sports car and the 4-door does not seem to look as beautiful as its rivals. The comfort levels are also very compromised given that this is the flagship Mercedes-AMG passenger car. It certainly goes fast and around corners very well, but other less voluminous models are prettier to look at and certainly more comfortable to ride in.
