Sometimes-FWD Ferrari SF90 Spider launched in Malaysia - 1,000 PS hybrid, priced from RM 2m

You're looking at the 2021 Ferrari SF90 Spider - an evolution of the SF90 Stradale that was unveiled in Malaysia last year. In case you haven't guessed it yet, this is the convertible counterpart to the fixed-roof Stradale.

That also means it's gotten a bit pricier, starting at RM 2.08 million before duties, customisation options, taxes, and insurance.

That's RM 188k dearer than the RM 1.9 million SF90 Stradale with the same pricing caveats.

Beyond the eye-watering price tag, other numbers are also on-par for a Ferrari - 0-100 km/h is sorted in 2.5 seconds, while 0-200 km/h is done in just 7 seconds (fun fact: it's an unnoticable 0.3 seconds slower than the Stradale).

The Stradale's aero grip merits transfer seamlessly here, as the Spider still generates the same levels of downforce, courtesy of F1-style strakes that shove air under the car, and fancy wing-profiled wheels that minimises turbulence.

Rocketing the SF90 along to its 340 km/h top speed is its PHEV powertrain that pairs its 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with three electric motors, and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that sends power to the wheels.

"But which wheels?", I hear you ask. Here's where it gets interesting - on the move, the SF90 Spider has three modes: electric, hybrid and all-wheel drive (AWD) hybrid.

In electric-only mode, the car's two front-mounted electric motors powers the front wheels, which, well makes it technically Ferrari's first front-wheel drive convertible. Interesting.

Slipping silently in eDrive, the 7.9 kWh battery affords a 25 km range, with a top-speed of 135 km/h.

Besides that, there's the usual Hybrid mode (RWD configuration), and also AWD hybrid mode, which avails the electric front axel for torque vectoring and energy recovery in lift-off/braking.

Of course, this is a Ferrari, so when you need to let loose there's a total output of 1,000 PS and 900 Nm for you to play with. Cacophony guaranteed.

Beyond all the tech-fest under the carbon-fibre and titanium bodywork, the interior features a button-packed steering wheel, with as many functions as possible tacked on there.

Reading out the everything you need to know is the curved, 16-inch fully-digital instrument cluster, and a head-up display on the raking windscreen.

In classic Ferrari fashion as well, the options list is limitless, but if you're getting one, spring for the Assetto Fiorano pack.

That equips the SF90 Spider with Multimatic shock absorbers, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, and drips more carbon-fibre and titanium all over.

It's proper, cutting-edge stuff that a select few can experience. But at least Adrian's lucky enough to have sat in it, started it up, and fiddled with the roof, and the result is a video you won't want to miss.
