Coming to Malaysia - 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge EV at Thai Motor Expo

This is the fully-electric (EV) Volvo XC40 Recharge P8, displayed at the 38th Thailand International Motor Expo 2021.

In Thailand, the XC40 EV is fully-imported (CBU) from China and is priced at 2,590,000 baht (around RM 323k). Note that under the ASEAN-China FTA, the Thai government does not impose any tax on EVs from China.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 has a total power output of 408 PS and total torque of 660 Nm. Power goes to all four wheels via the dual-motor setup. 0-100 km/h sprint time is rated at 4.9 seconds while top speed is capped at 180 km/h.

Battery capacity is rated at 78 kWh, providing a 418 km range on the WLTP cycle. For charging, the Volvo XC40 is capable of 11 kW AC charging (0-100% in 8 hours) or 150 kW DC fast charging (0-80% in 40 minutes).

Apart from the powertrain and covered grille, the XC40 EV is largely identical to the combustion-engine model.

Inside, the 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system runs on Android Automotive OS (recently seen in the facelifted 2022 Volvo XC60 in Malaysia) with Google services integration. There’s also a 600-watt Harman Kardon audio system.

Back in Malaysia, the Volvo XC40 Recharge EV is slated to arrive next year in Q1 2022. There are talks of the XC40 EV being locally-assembled (CKD), seeing that the entire Volvo range in Malaysia is CKD. But that remains as speculation for now and either way, EVs won’t be taxed, following the Budget 2022’s EV proposal.
