All-new 2022 Geely Emgrand L launched; We wish it becomes a Proton sedan

New Geely model based on the BMA platform alert, this is the all-new 2022 Geely Emgrand L sedan. The car will come complete with Firmware-Over-The-Air (FOTA) updates and is priced from RMB 100,000 (~RM 65,600) to RMB 109,900 (~RM 72,200).

With the car being a new generation built from the ground up, it’s not a surprise that the Emgrand L looks radically different from before. It bears the company’s new design language directly translated as Energy Storm.

It also sports the new generation expanding cosmos front grille design paired with a massive black lower air intake that can rival the grille on a Lexus. Look at the car from the side and the first thing you notice is the strong shoulder lines to make the car look longer than it is.

Meanwhile, the rear end features new LED taillamps connected by a black panel. The lower part of the rear end is finished with a chrome strip.

Inside, Geely’s designers picked a colour scheme inspired by Chinese calligraphy ink against paper. The black interior is infused with a shot of light turquoise colour to make the interior look livelier.

If you find the interior familiar, that’s because the cabin is very similar to the smaller Geely Emgrand.

As we’ve mentioned, the Emgrand L has FOTA updates but the software is the most advanced amongst Geely’s models yet. For the sedan, the FOTA update covers everything from infotainment software, ADAS software, and even updates for the chassis and power output.

On the safety front, the Emgrand L comes with a full suite of ADAS, four airbags for the base variant and six airbags for the range-topper.

Power comes from a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine similar to the Geely Binyue Pro aka Proton X50 that produces 141 PS and 235 Nm. However, instead of a DCT, the Emgrand L’s engine is mated to a CVT.

In case you’re wondering, the Geely Emgrand L slots above the Geely Emgrand that was launched earlier this year. It is also much larger than the Emgrand as it measures 4,735 x 1,815 x 1,478 mm in length, width, and height while the wheelbase is 2,700 mm.

Width (mm) 1,815 1,820
Height (mm) 1,478 1,460
Wheelbase (mm) 2,700 2,650

If you’re measuring the car against rivals from other brands, the Emgrand L slots between the Honda Civic and the Honda Accord.

Wheelbase (mm) 2,700 2,700 2,830

We won’t do the usual “possible Proton sedan” speech, but we will say that we wouldn’t mind if the angry-looking Geely Emgrand L will become a Proton.

Oops... Something broke.
