Perodua aims to sell nearly 250k units in 2022, its highest target ever

Even though Perodua ended 2021 on top, holding the title of best-selling brand and car in Malaysia, it failed to reach its target. With 2022 focused more on recovery, Perodua aims not only to maintain its position at the top but to also increase production and sales.

At a recent 2022 performance outlook press conference to the media, Perodua announced its target to produce 265,901 units in 2022, 37% higher than 2021 which saw 193,400 vehicles being produced.

Perodua is targeting 67,000 units of the Myvi to be built, accounting for 26% of the entire line-up. This is followed by the Bezza (24%), Axia (23%), Ativa (12%), Alza (9%), Aruz (5%), and others (1%).

According to Perodua President and CEO Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, the increase in production would result in the growth of locally-sourced automotive parts by 41.5% to RM 7.5 billion as compared with the RM 3.5 billion purchased in 2021.

“This recovery would help the industry heal faster as the demand for vehicles is still strong” he said.

Furthermore, Perodua also expects to improve its market share to 40.6% in 2022 by registering 247,800 vehicles against an estimated 610,000 total industry volume (TIV) as compared to a 37.4% market share in 2021. The sales figures along with the production figures are Perodua’s highest target ever.

The aforementioned TIV figure is Perodua’s internal projection which is higher than the 600,000 TIV forecast set by the Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA). Dato’ Zainal said that Perodua sees the assurances by the government that the measures of containing the Covid-19 pandemic is showing success that another lockdown would not happen.

He also explained that the sales tax exemption initiative introduced by the government is still an excellent incentive for the consumers to purchase new cars.
