In Brief: 2019 Lexus RX 300 - Who needs air suspension?

The Lexus RX 300 was given a facelift last year and the 200t moniker has been dropped in favour of 300, but the powertrain remains unchanged.

All three variants of the RX 300 (Premium, Luxury, and F-Sport) are propelled by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 238 PS and 350 Nm of torque. Power is channeled to all four wheels via a 6-speed automatic.

The one we have here is the F-Sport variant, priced at RM 424,187 (without SST).

What are its pros and cons?

Like all Lexus models, refinement is top notch. Engine, tyre, and wind noise are impeccably suppressed at any speed.

Plus, the Lexus RX 300’s ride quality is nothing short of amazing. No matter the road condition, the tranquility of the cabin would not be disrupted. At most, you’d get a gentle nudge from abnormally large bumps or potholes.

Material and build quality are top notch as well. It’s a Lexus after all. The Japanese craftsmanship is evident throughout the cabin, from the stitching to the fit and finish.

Over to the rear, the floor is completely flat despite being all-wheel drive, so the middle passenger would not have to compete for foot space. Which means fitting 3 abreast is a relatively comfortable affair.

However, the powertrain lacks that regal and effortless characteristic that was in the larger, naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 engine. It can feel a little lethargic at times, especially during light throttle input and the engine stays at a certain rpm, almost as if it’s a CVT.

Another niggle is the slightly dated looking switchgear. Personally, I would prefer a more minimalistic layout. Perhaps something like the Volvo XC90. Then again, some may prefer physical buttons for each setting or function, so to each their own.

Should you consider the Lexus RX 300?

If you’re looking for a luxury SUV to waft along in absolute comfort and serenity whilst cocooned in Japanese craftsmanship, then yes. Absolutely yes.

However, if you’re looking for an SUV that is able to deliver a bit of excitement when it comes to driving, then might we suggest the BMW X5 PHEV?

Toyota's Kinto is getting bored, finds a way to make the AH30 Alphard and Vellfire sliding doors close faster

You know how some cars can be truly fantastic except for one minor detail that you just can’t overlook and it ends up ruining the entire driving experience. It could be a terrible head unit or a bad seating position. Well, some of the engineers at Toyota’s Kinto subscription service thought that could be the abysmally slow speed of the sliding doors on the previous AH30 generation of the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. Either that or they must be getting really bored over there. Or someone has secr
