BMW M3 â Overview
The new G80 BMW M3 sedan was unveiled alongside the M4 Coupe, and BMW Malaysia is offering both models in the Competition variants. The Competition variant has higher engine outputs of 510 PS and 650 Nm and paired to an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission.Whatâs new with BMW M cars is the fitment of xDrive all-wheel drive system, which is only being manufactured later in 2021.
In Malaysia, the price for the G80 BMW M3 Competition sedan starts from RM 691,040, RM 20,000 lower than the M4 Competition coupe. At its initial order taking timing, BMW Malaysia offered the Innovation package for an additional RM 58,000 (promotional price). In Malaysia, the only other super sedan that comes close to the BMW M3 is the Mercedes-AMG C63S which was last priced at RM 769,000.
Audi Malaysia meanwhile has included RS models in their line-up with two non-sedan bodystyles on offer. The Audi RS4 Avant (wagon) is priced at RM 712,400, while the RS5 Sportback is priced at RM 727,000.
Exterior

BMW wanted to give the new generation G80 BMW M3 a much more distinctive styling with a high degree of separation over the standard G20 3 Series sedan. As such, it shares the large, vertically arranged and extremely deep BMW kidney grille with the G82 BMW M4 Coupe.The bumper not only feeds air to the radiators and intake to the two turbochargers, it also has deep ducts directing air to the front brakes and smaller radiators as well as integrated air flicks in the air curtain slots for smoother airflow.
The wheelbase of the BMW M3 is similar with the normal sedan, but width has increased by 3 inches (75 mm), with the overall width even wider (16 mm) than the M4 Coupe. The roof of the BMW M3 is made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), reducing the carâs centre of gravity. Parallel length-wise buldges are also formed to better channel the air over the BMW M3.

For easier identification, the Competition variant has black chrome treatment on the four exhaust tailpipes, side mirrors and rear spoiler.
The visually attractive forged double-spoke 826 M Bicolour black wheels measure 19 inches in front and 20 inches at the rear. Large blue coloured M-type brake calipers hide behind. Owners have the option to have black or red-painted calipers which is an additional price.
LED headlamps are standard, with the option of BMW Laserlights.

The dashboard of the G80 BMW M3 Competition is lifted from the 3 Series sedan. Graphics in the 12.3-inch digital instrument display however get an exclusive BMW M content, such as the centrally placed information display.With the basic price, the interior of the BMW M3 Competition sedan only comes in all-black with gloss-black interior trim. The M sport seats have the illuminated M3 emblem just under the headrest.
As for the back seats, occupants can adjust their preferred air-conditioning settings thanks to a 3-zone system.
Even with the M specific suspension members, sport differential and large exhaust muffler, the boot space hasnât changed a bit, maintaining the same 480 litres of cargo volume that is also seen in a humble BMW 320i.

The lower section of the centre console is what separates the G80 BMW M3 from the regular G20 3 Series sedan. Finished in high-gloss black, the lower console houses the shortcuts to M Mode, vehicle setup as well as the exhaust note controller.The gear selection lever meanwhile is finished in fine leather embedded with the M logo and stitching in M colours. The gear shift intensity or Drivelogic selection switch well integrated into the gear lever too.
Bright red is meanwhile used on the start/stop button as well as the two M buttons on the steering wheel. The M buttons feature as shortcuts to driver-set vehicle parameters such as engine response, suspension, steering, and even brake pedal response.
Other key features that are optional are the M Drive Professional with Track mode and Drift Analyser, M seatbelts, wireless smartphone charger, Head-up display and the BMW Display Key.
The Innovation Package that is priced at RM 75,000 (promotion at RM 58,000) included some of the optional features mentioned as well as Harman Kardon 16-speaker system, BMW Laserlights and Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant.
Safety
There are six airbags in the BMW M3 Competition sedan. BMWâs Driving Assistant package is a cost option in the fully-imported BMW M3, where buyers can select either the Driving Assistant or Driving Assistant Plus. Parking cameras with distance sensors are also cost options.Infotainment
The G80 BMW M3 Competition sedan comes with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional navigation 10.25-inch touch-sensitive display. Audio output is via the HiFi loudspeaker system.

Engine
The latest six-cylinder engine from BMW M maintains the 3.0-litre displacement, upgraded with many new components. Power outputs of the BMW M3 Competition sedan are 510 PS at 6,250 rpm and 650 Nm from 2,750 to 5,500 rpm. Driverâs will be happy to know they can rev the engine to 7,200 rpm with the automatic transmission.The high-revving engine that has a linear power delivery also sounds ferocious thanks to a sports exhausts system, which can be quiet down for a civilized drive around the neighbourhood.
BMW says the cooling system and oil supply have been designed for track use. Apart from a powerful electric fan, the intercooler also has its own cooling supply, and an electric water pump keeps coolant flowing to the two turbochargers even when the engine has been turned off.
Transmission
In the new G80 BMW M3 Competition sedan, the transmission is a specially-developed eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with shift paddles and Launch Control function. The Drivelogic switch allows the transmission to shift in three driver-selectable programs- comfort, sports or track.The durability of the transmission fluid is ensured by a dedicated cooling radiator mounted at the front.
Chassis
The bodyshell of the 3 Series sedan has been extensively modified to suit the usage of being a BMW M car. Precisely interlinked bracings and reinforcement members are strategically placed for maximum stiffness and rigidity. Standard fitment of the roof sheet made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) lowers the centre of gravity for better handling. One major drawback with the Innovation Package is the fitment of the moonroof, which then replaces the lightweight CFRP roof with steel material.The front suspension features a double-joint strut axle setup, while the rear axle uses a five-link layout. The majority of the suspension components are in aluminium material, a trademark of modern BMW M cars. There is also M Servotronic steering with variable ratio.
Electronically-controlled adaptive M suspension is standard in the G80 BMW M3 Competition sedan. M Compound brakes discs meanwhile measure 380 mm in front and are grabbed by six-piston fixed-caliper brakes. M Carbon ceramic brakes are a RM 80,120 option with the calipers painted only in Gold metallic, very easy to spot. A new brake actuator is standard in the new G80 BMW M3 Competition sedan. It allows the driver to choose comfort or sport mode to alter the amount of brake pressure.
After proven beneficial in the BMW M4 GTS and BMW M4 CS models, larger wheels and tyres are now standard fitment in the new BMW M3 Competition sedan. The rear wheels measure 10.5 x 20 inches, an inch larger in diameter than the front wheels, with the tyres in 285/30R20 size.
Rear-wheel grip and agility is compounded by the M Sport differential, where an electronic system variably controls the independent torque levels of the left and right rear wheels. Delivering more torque to the outside wheel with more grip enhances traction out of the corner.
Drivetrain
Headlining the international launch of the new G80 BMW M3 sedan was the availability of the xDrive all-wheel drive system. Currently, BMW Malaysia only offers the G80 BMW M3 Competition sedan in rear-wheel drive form.The xDrive variant is only slated for sale much later in 2021.
Driving Performance

The G80 BMW M3 Competition sedan with 510 PS and 650 Nm of torque can complete the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds, where Launch Control mode is also available. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h.Straight-line acceleration is phenomenal with the close-ratio of the automatic transmission and short final drive ratio. Engine intake and exhaust noises all richly envelope the cabin as part of the BMW M car experience.
The chassis has been carefully tuned to enable drivers with various skill and experience level to fully enjoy the 510 PS and 650 Nm. Grip levels are much higher than before, and the electronics enable one to push the car even more with increased confidence.
After a hard day at the circuit, one can enjoy the monotonous drive back through the highway, in great comfort and refinement built into the cabin. The new BMW M3 has become a mature, all-rounder.

Perhaps, with prices of technology and features increasing, it could be a wise-move by BMW Malaysia to include just standard features in the new BMW M3 sedan to reach a more palatable price level of RM 691,040, the lowest among all the super sedans.
There are many keen drivers who are happy to have advanced driving assist systems omitted from their cars, as such, the base BMW M3 sedan might just suit them.
