According to the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) registration data, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have outsold hybrid models in four of the last six months in 2024. This trend is largely due to the variety of new BEV models entering the Malaysian market primarily from China such as BYD and GWM, in addition to premium brands such as Tesla and BMW. In contrast, hybrid models are mainly represented by a few established models mainly from Toyota and Honda. BEV vs Hybrid sales in H1 2024 Month B

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) announced yesterday that it sold 7,345 units of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in April 2024, with Toyota-badged models contributing 7,213 units, while the imported-from-Japan only Lexus contributed 132 units. That’s a that month-on-month, UMWT’s sales had dropped by 25 percent, but t
After breaking news about Tesla cutting more than 10 percent of its workforce last month, which included the complete disbandment of the team behind its Supercharger network, Electrek reports that another round of layoff is imminent. At the same time, Toyota has just posted its highest ever group operating profit for financial year ending March 2024 (FY2024), at 5.35 trillion Yen, or RM 163.6 billion. The figure is nearly doubled that FY2023’s profit of 2.73 trillion Yen (~RM 83.4 billion). Toyo
Say what you will about the Toyota Corolla Cross but one thing is certain, it’s been a sales success in Malaysia, outselling the Proton X70 even though it is pricier. 4 years after its world debut in Thailand, the Kingdom played host to the unveiling of the facelifted crossover earlier this month. The 2024 Corolla Cross facelift sports a new look but what else changed? We’ll take a look at the differences between the old pre-facelift and the new facelift which would be arriving in Malaysia somet
The stark contrast between the falling income of battery electric vehicle-only (BEV) stalwarts like Tesla, Polestar, Nio, and Xpeng, versus the record earnings by companies with more varied product portfolios - Volvo, BYD, even supposedly BEV laggards like Toyota and Honda proves one thing – BEVs are the future, but manufacturers need profitable hybrids today to fund their BEV endeavours tomorrow. Manufacturers relying on a 100 percent BEV-only line-up are in for a very painful journey ahead. BY
When the first crossover to bear the Corolla name made its world debut in Thailand in 2020, it fully cemented the longevity of the world’s best-selling car with a trendy SUV style. The Toyota Corolla Cross is a sales juggernaut overseas despite looking as exciting as drywall and 4 years later, a facelift was unveiled in Thailand. Previously teased by Toyota Motor Thailand, the new Corolla Cross gains a massive facelift that gives an EV-like appearance with a clean, almost grille-less design. The
After the refreshed 2024 Toyota Hilux snagged headlines earlier today, next week will be all about the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift, as it will be unveiled in Thailand on Thursday, 8-February 2024. It will be the car's mid-life update since it made its global debut in July 2020 (time flies, doesn't it?), and typical of those, what's obvious in today's teaser are refreshed looks. The headlight signature is reminiscent of the Corolla Cross sold in other markets, with new daytime running ligh
Whatever car you choose, and despite all the tech that's loaded into them, your decision ultimately rests on what's under the hood. Performance and fuel efficiency are usually right up there in the Malaysian buyer's decision making matrix, and the engine that provides these must also be very reliable. Better yet if it's not a hassle to maintain. Best if it could also hedge against next year's increasing fuel prices. A tough ask for manufacturers, so usually it's a balance between two or three of
The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross has finally undergone a facelift in Japan, and while the visuals haven't changed all that much, it's the insides that's received a bunch of fixes...and more power. New and improved powertrains Headlining all changes is the new engine sitting in the bay: normal, pure-petrol variants gain a new 2.0-litre Dynamic Force engine (M20A-FKS), while the hybrid variants continue with the 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE mill, albeit with some improvements. The new engine – in Malaysia, it p
