Though Lexus only just welcomed the brand’s first ever battery-electric vehicle (BEV), Lexus UX 300e, at the 2019 Guangzhou Auto Show, the electric crossover already has a planned route across the South East Asian market. And the first destination is Indonesia.
This doesn’t come as a surprise since Indonesia has declared a very aggressive push to move towards EVs.
Not only have government declared that they will start using EVs in 2021, but they have also introduce policies aimed at making Indonesia the Arabia of the EV era.
According to a report by Indonesian publication Motoris, Lexus might be looking to launch the UX 300e as soon as this week. A source told them that Toyota is hoping that the new full electric crossover would spur the company’s electrified vehicle strategy in Indonesia.
As EVs in Indonesia are still viewed as premium vehicles, Lexus has set their sights on fulfilling the wish of premium environmentally conscious customers who are ready to go fully-electric.
At the moment, the Indonesian government is in talks with EV giant Tesla to become the world's biggest producer of EV batteries.
You will be hard pressed to tell the differences between the UX 300e and the standard UX variants as Lexus did not make any design changes to it.
The only signs that sets the UX 300e apart from the standard variants are the charging port on the right rear quarter and the badges on the back.
The UX 300e is driven by a front-mounted electric motor that produces 240 PS and 300 Nm. Power comes from a 54.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack giving the UX 300e a range of about 315 km.
Standard AC charging has a charge rate of 6.6 kW while a DC fast charger delivers 50 kW charge rate.
The automotive industry in our neighbouring countries like Indonesia, Thailand and even Singapore is getting interesting as motoring brands race towards an electric future. Meanwhile, Malaysians are still getting to know alternative engine sources like the Honda City RS e:HEV with its i-MMD engine.
