Deal breakers: The Mitsubishi Outlander air-conditioning system needs to be improved

Although the Mitsubishi Outlander is often overlooked in the C-segment SUV market, it remains as a very competent option for families seeking a 7-seater SUV.

While some may scoff at the Outlander’s lack of ADAS features or uninspiring design, it remains as a very capable (and surprisingly comfortable) family mover.

Small niggles aside, the biggest gripe we had with the Mitsubishi Outlander is its air-conditioning system.

In an effort to appear driver-centric, the Outlander’s centre and driver’s side air-conditioning vents are angled towards the driver, which makes it unbearably cold on longer drives, while passengers at the rear are left feeling warmer.

Yes, the air-conditioning vents can be angled, but despite angling it to extreme sides, it made little to no difference and was definitely an annoyance to anyone driving the Outlander.

As for the rear passengers, despite being positioned as a 7-seater SUV, the Outlander isn’t equipped with rear air-conditioning vents.

No, really.

To keep the rear passengers cool, the driver would need to crank up the fan speed to at least level 3 or 4, but that would bring us back to the first point. Setting a temperature that’s just nice for the occupants will be rather uncomfortable for the driver.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia is aware of this, and as an effort to remedy that, buyers of the Outlander have the option of fitting the SUV with a roof-mounted air circulator, which helps to divert cool air to the second- and third-row seats.

But putting aside the poor air-conditioning design, the Mitsubishi Outlander offers superior ride and handling over its segment rivals.

Even with its 18-inch alloy wheels, ride comfort is surprisingly supple without sacrificing handling. In fact, ride comfort is much better than the Honda CR-V.

Its third-row seats are also the most spacious in its segment. While the Nissan X-Trail also boasts third-row seats, those are too cramped for comfort. The third-row seats in the Outlander are large enough to accommodate a 175 cm adult with ease.

Unlike a lot of its rivals, the Mitsubishi Outlander is also equipped, as standard, with window tints.

Rounding up the Outlander is its service network – JD Power has ranked Mitsubishi the highest in after-sales service satisfaction, putting it slightly ahead of Toyota and Mazda.

Oops... Something broke.

Toyota's Kinto is getting bored, finds a way to make the AH30 Alphard and Vellfire sliding doors close faster

You know how some cars can be truly fantastic except for one minor detail that you just can’t overlook and it ends up ruining the entire driving experience. It could be a terrible head unit or a bad seating position. Well, some of the engineers at Toyota’s Kinto subscription service thought that could be the abysmally slow speed of the sliding doors on the previous AH30 generation of the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. Either that or they must be getting really bored over there. Or someone has secr

Review: BYD Dolphin in Malaysia - A solid choice for EV beginners, except for one thing

You might be aware that Malaysia prohibits the import of electric vehicles (EVs) priced below RM 100,000, and this is indeed accurate. The rationale behind this policy, driven by the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), is actually sound when you consider their goal of attracting investments in the EV sector. In the world of technology, most of the valuable stuff is in the higher-end product range. Cheaper electric cars have minimal technological sophistication; they're kind of li
