Malaysian rally ace Karamjit Singh is working to secure a driving seat in a Proton Iriz R5 built by UK’s Mellors Motorsports, according to Careta.my,
Following Karamjit's meeting with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) yesterday, Minister Dato' Sri Reezal Merican Naina Merican has said that the ministry is in principle, agreeable to allocate RM 3 million to sponsor Karamjit Singh’s participation at the 2021 Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). The keyword here is ‘in principle.’ To date, no decision has been made yet.
A source told Careta.my that while the ministry’s support is welcomed, Karamjit Singh will still need to find his own sponsors. Motorsports is an expensive sport.
The source added, “Perhaps now that Geely is profiting from healthier sales of Proton vehicles, it could participate as a sponsor."
The Iriz R5 is an FIA homologated rally car, developed to compete in the R5 category. Its 1.6-litre turbocharged engine makes up to 350 hp and 450 Nm, depending on state of tune. Drive is transferred to all four wheels via an Xtrac all-wheel drive system and a 5-speed sequential shift gearbox.
Prices start from RM 776,000. No that's not a typo. This is an FIA homologated R5 rally car.
