Launched in Malaysia: Volvo XC40 Recharge EV - First CKD EV, 408 PS/660 Nm, 418 km range

  • Volvo's first EV model
  • First locally-assembled (CKD) EV in Malaysia
  • Price to be announced on 4-April 2022

Volvo Car Malaysia has launched the all-electric (EV) Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. This marks the third EV launched in Malaysia within one week, following the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Mercedes-Benz EQA.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge EV is locally-assembled (CKD) in the Shah Alam plant, making it the first CKD EV in Malaysia.

While Volvo Car Malaysia calls this a launch, pricing and detailed specifications have yet to be announced. Price of the XC40 Recharge EV will be announced on 4-April 2022, after which customers may book online on the same day.

Note that this isn’t the facelifted Volvo XC40 that was recently revealed.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 has a total power output of 408 PS and total torque of 660 Nm from the dual motors that propels all four wheels (AWD). 0-100 km/h sprint time is rated at 4.9 seconds while top speed is capped at 180 km/h as with all new Volvos.

Battery capacity is rated at 78 kWh, providing a 418 km range on a WLTP cycle. As for charging via the CCS (Combine Charging System) Combo 2 connector, the Volvo XC40 Recharge EV can take up to 11 kW in AC charging (0-100% in 8 hours), and supports up to 150 kW DC fast charging (0-80% in 40 minutes).

In terms of exterior, it’s largely identical to the regular Volvo XC40, save for the covered front grille and the emblem at the rear. Wheels are 19-inch items wrapped with staggered tyre sizes, with 235/50 R19 rubbers at the front and 255/45 R19 at the rear.

Since the electric motor takes up less space than a combustion engine, there is a front trunk (frunk) that is rated at 31 litres, which a bonus to the 413-litre boot at the rear.

Inside, the 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system runs on Android Automotive OS (recently seen in the facelifted 2022 Volvo XC60 in Malaysia) with Google services integration. The digital instrument cluster also gets revised graphics.

As with all Volvo models offered in Malaysia, the Volvo XC40 Recharge EV gets the full ADAS suite of IntelliSafe with AEB, LKA, CTA, BLIS, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, and Run-off Road Mitigation. There’s also Pilot Assist, a level 2 semi-autonomous driving feature.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge EV will be available for viewing at all authorised Volvo dealers in Malaysia from 4-April 2022. Deliveries of the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric will start from the end of April 2022 onwards, for all locations throughout Malaysia.
