Our burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) market welcomes a new face as the 2022Ioniq 5 has just been launched in Malaysia. There's three variants on offer, and prices are as below:
Ioniq 5 Lite: RM 199,888
Ioniq 5 Plus: RM 229,888
Ioniq 5 Max: RM 259,888
All prices are inclusive SST discount, valid until 30-June 2022. Beginning July, full sales tax will apply to the model, but the Ioniq 5's status as a fully-imported (CBU Korea) battery-EV means import and excise duties, as well as road tax will be exempted for it until 31-December 2023.
It's not the star-spoked 19-inch (or 20, depending on variant) wheels, or Parametric Pixel tail lights that grabs your attention when you look at it for the first time, beautiful as they are. It's its size. Talk about girthy – a Golf-sized hatch this is not.
With a body measuring 4,635 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, and 1,605 mm tall, the Ioniq 5 is a proper SUV, one that's bigger than a Honda CR-V and about equal to a Mercedes-Benz GLC.
A 3,000 mm wheelbase (longer than a BMW 5 Series'!) means the cabin is roomy as can be, allowing for fancy features not seen in most SUVs sold here – sliding and reclining rear seats, anyone?
Other trickeries include a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, standard), and next to it is a digital instrument cluster that measures the same.
The Lite and Plus get a regular roof, while the Max comes with the cool solar-panel roof that's said to give up to 2,000 km of range per year. Particularly interesting is the magnetic holder on the dashboard, and the pull-out glove box.
You'll find sustainably-sourced materials throughout the interior, and some of it are downright ingenious: each seat fabric is made up of recycled PET bottles (essentially the RM1 water bottles), while other fabric touchpoints use bio components extracted from sugar cane and corn.
Flaxseed oil, rape flowers, and corn make up the dyes of the cabin, while the detailing on the doors are derived from 100% recycled paperette.
Also – and this is by far, the coolest bit – the Ioniq 5 has got vehicle-to-load (V2L) sockets that can supply up to 3.6 kW, enough to power a 55-inch TV or medium-sized air-conditioner for 24 hours via 110V / 220 V. It's the only EV in Malaysia to have this function.
Loads of what it has seems a little ahead of its time, a time where people would rather argue about recyclable their cars are instead of how powerful it is. Though on that front, the Ioniq 5 won't lose anytime soon...
Electrifying performance
Our Ioniq 5 gets two battery options, 58 kWH and 72.6 kWh. The smaller capacity battery powers the Lite and Plus variants, while the bigger one drives the Max.
Besides battery size, the other key difference between them is the number of driven wheels: the Lite and Plus are rear-wheel drive, with a 170 PS/350 Nm rear motor, while the Max is all-wheel drive, with a motor on each axle, producing a total of 305 PS and 605 Nm.
All variants are speed-capped at 185 km/h. WLTP range for the Lite and Plus is 380 km, while the Max returns 430 km.
As usual, the Ioniq 5 has a CCS Combo 2 charging port. A standard 11 kW home AC charger can juice the Ioniq 5 from 0% to 100% in 6 hours, while a 50 kW DC charger can charge from 10% to 80% in just 47 minutes.
The Ioniq 5 aso supports both 400V and 800V DC ultra-fast charging, making it only the second EV in Malaysia to have it - the first one is the Porsche Taycan.
Full ADAS is part of the kit
On the safety front, the Ioniq 5 comes with the full Hyundai SmartSense active safety (ADAS):
There's also 7 airbags, and a 360-degree camera for ease of parking.
Warranty, service, and accessories
Standard warranty for the Ioniq 5 is 2 years/50,000 km, while the battery itself is covered for 8 years/160,000 km. Optional packages (allowing customers to mix-and-match) are as below:

Conclusion: It'll charge Malaysia's EV landscape
With only 274 units sold in total last year, Malaysia's EV landscape is a small but growing one. Looking at its specs relative to pricing, the Ioniq 5 seems to have the capability to coax customers into making their first EV, a Korean one.
