Khairy: Third national car? Never even discussed

The third national car company project has been a very controversial topic among Malaysians ever since it was proposed. Even with a change in government, the project seemed to be ongoing despite not knowing where some of the funds went.

Interestingly, another minister has said that the third national car project might not even be considered for development. This was first pointed out by Careta.

Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Khairy Jamaluddin has said in a townhall livestream on 19 August that the whole idea of a third national car was never even discussed by the cabinet during his tenure in the ministry.

He continued that it would be “fool-hardy for us to develop a 3rd national car based on conventional combustible engine”.

He added that he is interested to give grants to companies interested in developing electric vehicle (EV) technology but raised some doubts on whether this can be competitive or not.

He was asked by a representative of a local EV start-up on his thoughts on the third national car project and its partnership with Daihatsu. Daihatsu is also a partner with Perodua, the second national carmaker.

“But to start again with a national car, I think that bus…that train has left the station a long time ago. It’s over,” concluded Khairy.

The cult of the Toyota AE86 in Malaysia - An over-glorified anime car?

For a lot of us petrolheads, the origins of why we love cars often come from various media. The spark could come from video games like Gran Turismo or movies like The Fast and the Furious but when it comes to our featured car, the Toyota AE86 really needs no introduction. The anime/manga/movie that featured the famous black and white liftback with a tofu shop name inscribed on the driver’s door brought the art of drifting to a mainstream audience. My esteemed colleague and WapCar BM’s editor, Za

Takumi's new old car: Toyota presents EV conversion for AE86 with 6MT, plus a hydrogen-burning one

"Leaving no car lovers behind" is Toyota's precept behind their exhibition at the ongoing 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon. Slightly sentimental, yes, but the proof of that is in seeing their cars of yesteryear make it to today's show – exemplifying that is this pair of concept AE86s; one fuelled by hydrogen (H2), and the other, pure electric (BEV). Carbon neutrality through old cars First, a bit of background. Toyota Motor Corporation's (TMC) outlook on carbon neutrality doesn't solely tunnel on new EVs,
